The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) launched a federal crackdown on illegal immigration in New Orleans on Tuesday, dubbed "Operation Catahoula Crunch."

The operation targets illegal immigrants who were released from jail and back into communities after their arrests for crimes such as home invasion, armed robbery, and rape, according to Homeland Security Department Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.

“Sanctuary policies endanger American communities by releasing illegal criminal aliens and forcing DHS law enforcement to risk their lives to remove criminal illegal aliens that should have never been put back on the streets,” said McLaughlin in a <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2025/12/03/dhs-launches-operation-catahoula-crunch-new-orleans-targeting-criminal-illegal">statement.</a>

Attorney General Pam Bondi has accused New Orleans of undermining federal immigration enforcement and providing sanctuary to immigrants without legal status.

New Orleans is included in <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-publishes-list-sanctuary-jurisdictions">a list of 18 cities </a>that the DOJ considers to be sanctuary jurisdictions.

Local officials deny their city’s policies thwart federal immigration enforcement.

City police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick has said she considers immigration enforcement to be a civil matter outside her jurisdiction.

New Orleans Mayor-Elect Helena Morena considers the operation to be racial profiling,

“What they’re seeing on TV and reports that they’re seeing is not that Border Patrol is going after the most violent criminals,” <a href="https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/immigration-enforcement-minnesota-nola-12-03-25">Morena said</a> during an interview on CNN.  “That’s not what they’re seeing,” said Moreno. “What they’re seeing is what appears to be racial profiling of brown people and then going after these individuals and treating them like they are these significantly violent offenders.”

Local immigration lawyers have been inundated with calls even before the operation began. Several local businesses have posted signage barring federal agents from entering and protests were held ahead of the operation.

In addition to federal immigration agents, Landry expects the National Guard to be deployed to the city. The governor said during an interview that the troops will arrive before Christmas to join the crackdown on crime.

Louisiana has been preparing for weeks for a federal operation and Republican Gov. Jeff Landry said he would welcome it.

The governor confirmed the operation in New Orleans and said it will continue until the city is safe once again.

“It started today and it’s going to run until we get them all off the street,” Landry said during an interview on the Walton & Johnson radio show.

Federal agents have already launched operations in Chicago and Charlotte, North Carolina.

Another one is planned in Minnesota in the coming days, targeting Somali immigrants living unlawfully in the United States.
