Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has rejected the idea of a Chinese military base in the Pacific Islands, saying China has no need for one, and would not be welcome in Fiji if it tried.

The Pacific Islands have become a geopolitical flashpoint, as China expands its presence through a security pact with the Solomon Islands. Rabuka cited China’s September test of an intercontinental ballistic missile—which flew over Fiji and landed in international waters—as evidence that Beijing doesn’t require a military outpost in the area.
