Former University of Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore was arrested on Wednesday in connection with an alleged assault, just hours after the school announced his firing, saying they uncovered evidence he had engaged in an "inappropriate relationship" with a staff member.

Moore, 39, was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail in Ann Arbor on Dec. 10 at 8:30 p.m. local time, online <a href="https://vinelink.vineapps.com/person-detail/offender/51985393;tabIndexToSelect=0">records</a> show.

The Pittsfield Police Department said in a statement that authorities responded to the 3000 block of Ann Arbor Saline Road at 4:10 p.m. on Wednesday "for the purposes of investigating an alleged assault."

"A suspect in this case was taken into custody. This incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community," the statement <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pittsfielddps/posts/pfbid0HRZDeT4TAB77Q2B3po9whwfkwMv3mZjvDFVf2cfgKW4ynKBjefteb3q5nnGeyr7Ml">reads</a>.

"Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details. Further details regarding the incident will be released as soon as permissible."

The Saline Police Department <a href="https://www.espn.com/contributor/pete-thamel/f3392a1e284f1">told</a> ESPN that its officers "assisted in locating and detaining" Moore, adding that he was subsequently turned over to the Pittsfield Police Department for investigation into "potential charges."

In an <a href="https://www.pittsfield-mi.gov/ArchiveCenter/ViewFile/Item/8092">update</a>, the Pittsfield Police Department said Moore remains in custody at the county jail pending a review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor and is expected to appear in court on Dec. 12 for arraignment.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are asking anyone with information about the alleged assault to contact the Pittsfield Police Department through their confidential tip line.

Moore was hired as Michigan's tight ends coach before the 2018 season, becoming the offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator three years later.

In January 2024, Michigan announced that Moore would replace Jim Harbaugh as the Wolverines' head coach after his departure to the NFL. Moore led the team to an 8-5 record in his debut season, and the Wolverines are 9-3 this year.

On Wednesday, Michigan revealed Moore had been fired in an email sent to the <a href="https://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverines/2025/12/10/sherrone-moore-arrested-michigan-football/87709407007/#:~:text=According%20to%20police%2C%20the%20incident%20occurred%20at%204%3A10%20p.m.%20on%20Wednesday.%20Michigan%20announced%20that%20Moore%20had%20been%20fired%20in%20an%20email%20to%20the%20media%20at%204%3A43%20p.m.">media</a> approximately 30 minutes after police responded to the alleged assault.

"Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately," Warde Manuel, Michigan's athletic director, <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/sherrone-moore-michigan-coach-fired-for-cause/">said</a> in a statement. "Following a university investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and UM maintains zero tolerance for such behavior."

Associate head coach Biff Poggi was named the interim coach, effective immediately. Poggi, a former investment fund manager, joined Michigan as an analyst for the 2016 season. He served as an associate head coach from 2021 to 2022, returning to the position in 2024.

Poggi previously filled in for Moore when he was suspended earlier this season in connection with a years-long <a href="https://www.ntd.com/michigan-fined-coach-suspended-in-sign-stealing-scandal_1085281.html">sign-stealing scandal</a>.

Moore's five-year contract with Michigan included a base salary of $5.5 million. According to the terms of his deal, the university will not have to buy out the remaining years of his contract because he was fired for cause.

NTD reached out to the university for additional comment. A representative for Moore could not immediately be reached for a statement.
