Australia's former Prime Minister Scott Morrison plans to visit Taiwan in October, looking to further cooperation with the island.

Beijing immediately lashed out at the deal, criticizing Taiwan and the Australian delegation.

China's ambassador to Australia accused the deal's supporters in Taiwan of being separatists and said they were using the lawmaker in an effort to gain independence.

Beijing described that as something that would hurt China-Australia ties.

In response, the former Prime Minister praised Taiwan's role on the world stage—citing its booming economy and democracy.

He said he's looking forward to the trip and condemned Beijing's ambassador for overstepping when it comes to Australia's foreign policy.
