Freed American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander has returned to his home state of New Jersey more than a month after being released by Hamas terrorists.

Alexander, the last living American hostage in Gaza, was welcomed by a crowd of supporters, family, and friends in the suburb of Tenafly on Thursday.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy shared images of Alexander's arrival home, which featured him smiling and greeting supporters from inside a black SUV. Crowds of people lined the streets and waved both American and Israeli flags as a police vehicle escorted his vehicle through the neighborhood.

Alexander moved to Israel and enlisted in the military after he graduated from high school in 2022.

He was 19  years old when he was taken from his military base in southern Israel during Hamas’ cross-border attack on Oct. 7, 2023, which set off the war in Gaza.

On May 12, following 19 months in captivity, Hamas released Alexander as a goodwill gesture toward the Trump administration amid efforts to reach a ceasefire deal.

The newly freed hostage spent some time with family in Israel before returning to the United States on Thursday.

Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) celebrated Alexander's homecoming.

“Today is a huge day worthy of great celebration across our state!" Gottheimer said in a <a href="https://gottheimer.house.gov/posts/statement-gottheimer-welcomes-home-american-hostage-edan-alexander">statement</a>. "After 584 days at the hands of Hamas terrorists, Jersey native, Tenafly resident, and my constituent, Edan Alexander is finally home with his family and friends. Through it all, the strength of the Alexander family has been a guiding light for all of us in an incredibly dark period. But they never gave up hope — and neither did we."

Hamas militants abducted <a href="https://www.ntd.com/hamas-releases-3-hostages-as-fragile-cease-fire-holds_1047841.html">251 people</a> in the Oct. 7 attack and killed around 1,200, mostly civilians.

Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff met with Alexander after he was released and <a href="https://x.com/SE_MiddleEast/status/1922204832942981383">said</a> the United States is committed to "bringing every last hostage home."

Alexander’s release prompted criticism against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom some accused of having to rely on a foreign leader to help free the remaining hostages. Netanyahu has asserted that he intends to achieve Israel’s goals of freeing the hostages and dismantling Hamas.

Alexander’s father, Adi, has <a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-gaza-hamas-israeli-american-freed-hostage-edan-alexander-1f0cc6dde9e1c3fbaef1ca3dea22652f">urged Netanyahu</a> to “rise above politics to prioritize human life.”

President Donald Trump described his release as a "good faith" effort toward the United States and mediators Qatar and Egypt to end the war. He said he hoped it was the first of the final steps to ending the brutal conflict.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier this year he's committed to bringing all the hostages home, including the deceased ones captured by Hamas.

Following Alexander's release, Gottheimer further called for Hamas to release the bodies of two Americans still in Gaza.

"Edan’s return is a reminder that we must not rest until every last hostage is reunited with their families and loved ones," Gottheimer said. "That includes the return of the remains of the two Americans who were brutally murdered at the hands of Hamas—Omer Neutra and Itay Chen.”

Neutra, 22, was a grandson of Holocaust survivors, while Chen, 19, was the youngest American hostage in Hamas captivity, according to the <a href="https://www.ajc.org/news/meet-the-two-american-hostages-still-held-by-hamas">American Jewish Committee</a>.
