Former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre revealed she is no longer a Democrat while promoting her new book titled "Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines."

“Until January 20, I was responsible for speaking on behalf of the President of the United States,” Jean-Pierre said in a <a href="https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/in-the-news/legacy-lit-acquires-independent-by-former-white-house-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre/">statement</a> released through publisher Legacy Lit on Wednesday.

“At noon on that day, I became a private citizen who, like all Americans and many of our allies around the world, had to contend with what was to come next for our country. I determined that the danger we face as a country requires freeing ourselves of boxes. We need to be willing to exercise the ability to think creatively and plan strategically.”

Jean-Pierre, 50, says she didn’t make the decision to become an Independent lightly.

In an <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DKeqkaFRnCC/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D">Instagram post</a> on Wednesday discussing the book, the longtime Democrat urged Americans to save the country by following their own compass and "not be so partisan."

Publisher Legacy Lit said her book outlines a "hard-hitting yet hopeful" assessment of the nation's "broken two-party system."

Jean-Pierre describes in the book the three weeks that led to former President Joe Biden "abandoning his bid" for a second term and the "betrayal" by his own party that ultimately led to his decision, according to the <a href="https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/karine-jean-pierre/independent/9781538777084/">book description</a>.

Biden dropped out of the race for the White House in July 2024 following a disappointing debate with his Republican opponent, now President Donald Trump, that raised doubts about his fitness for office. The decision came after escalating pressure from his Democratic allies to step aside following the June 27 debate.

Historically, a party’s presumptive presidential nominee has never stepped out of the race so close to an election. During that time, Jean-Pierre faced tough questions from the press about Biden's mental capacity and ability to serve as commander-in-chief.

Jean-Pierre's decision to leave the Democratic Party comes after a long tenure serving two Democratic administrations.

In 2020, Jean-Pierre joined Biden’s presidential campaign as a senior adviser and eventually became former Vice President Kamala Harris’s chief of staff. In 2022, she succeeded Jen Psaki as press secretary after previously serving as deputy press secretary.

As press secretary, Jean-Pierre served as the official White House spokesperson in a very public and high-profile role, facing reporters' questions and speaking on behalf of the former president.

Prior to working for Biden, the longtime Democrat worked behind the scenes on both of former President Barack Obama's presidential campaigns. She also served as regional political director for the White House Office of Political Affairs during Obama's first term.

In her new book, Jean-Pierre defines what it means to be part of the growing percentage of the country's fractured electorate and the importance of creating a political space more loyal to personal beliefs than party affiliation, according to the book description.

"In an urgent, timely analysis, Independent urges all Americans to vote their values and maintain individuality within party lines," it <a href="https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/karine-jean-pierre/independent/9781538777084/">states</a>. "She presents clear arguments and provocative evidence as an insider about the importance of dismantling the torrent of disinformation and misinformation that has been rampant in recent elections and provides passionate insight for moving forward."

Political independents continue to be the largest political bloc in the country, with an average of 43 percent of U.S. adults identifying as an independent in 2023, tying the record high from 2014, according to <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/548459/independent-party-tied-high-democratic-new-low.aspx">Gallup.</a>
