Unpopular budget cuts for 2026, including the removal of two public holidays and high taxes on the middle class, have triggered resistance from the Socialists and the National Rally.

According to former National Rally economist Philippe Murer, France is politically gridlocked, with both Bayrou and President Emmanuel Macron deeply unpopular. Macron could appoint a new prime minister, call snap elections, or resign, as debt levels and deficits continue to strain the government.
