A livestream camera mounted on a telescope captured the footage in January.

The national astronomical observatory of Japan, which owns the telescope, suggested the laser came from a NASA satellite, but NASA scientists told the agency that they believe it came from a Chines satellite called daqi-1.

The Chinese satellite mainly measures greenhouse gases, pollutants, among other things.
