A gunman opened fire on a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility in McAllen, Texas, on Monday.

The gunman opened fire on a CBP annex near the McAllen International Airport. Agents and local police responded, killing the gunman; one local police officer was injured.

"This morning an individual opened fire at the entrance of the United States Border Patrol sector annex in McAllen, Texas," the Department of Homeland Security said in a <a href="https://x.com/DHSgov/status/1942249841167303061">statement</a> on X. "Both Border Patrol agents and local police helped neutralize the shooter. Two officers and a Border Patrol employee were injured, including one shot in the knee. All three have gone to the hospital. This is an ongoing investigation led by the @FBI."

The city of McAllen was forced to close the McAllen International Airport and delay flights due to the shooting.

"Due to off-airport safety concerns, vehicles and passengers will not be permitted to enter the terminal or parking lot," the city said in a statement on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1CSVChCehr/">Facebook</a> page. "Access will remain restricted until further notice."

The airport was <a href="https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1C6vnC8jqT/">re-opened</a> a few hours later.

The shooting was initially reported by Fox News national correspondent <a href="https://x.com/BillMelugin_/status/1942230364073967869">Bill Melugin</a> on X. Melugin reported that "an active shooter with a rifle & tactical gear ambushed Border Patrol agents as they arrived" at the facility. Melugin reported that the attack was an ambush against federal agents but that no agents were hurt. Melugin also shared photos from the scene, apparently showing the crime scene with the suspect's body. Another photo showed bullet holes in the front door of the CBP facility.

McAllen police chief Victor Rodriguez confirmed details of the shooting in a <a href="https://www.krgv.com/news/suspect-killed-in-mcallen-border-patrol-shooting-identified/">press conference</a> Monday. According to Rodriguez, police responded to the scene at about 6 a.m. local time. The responding officer—a 10-year veteran of the force named Ismael Garcia—was struck by a bullet from the gunman in his knee. He was transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover.

The suspect was tentatively identified as 27 year-old Ryan Luis Mosquera. Mosquera was apparently from Michigan, and had a Michigan license plate on his car. Police connected him to an address in Weslaco, located about 16 miles of McAllen. Weslaco police received a report that he was missing at around 4 a.m. local time. Rodriguez said he was unaware of any previous criminal history and deferred to federal authorities on questions of motive.

Rodriguez said that police found more ammunition stored in backpacks in Mosquera's car. There was also a spray painted message, possibly Latin, on the car, but Rodriguez did not know what the message was or whether it was connected to the shooting. Authorities swept the car for explosives—finding none—before collapsing the crime scene and allowing normal traffic in and around the facility to resume.

Border Patrol Chief <a href="https://x.com/CBP/status/1942295688412307587">Mike Banks</a> said he is now pulling agents out of the field to harden security and prevent future attacks at CBP facilities. He also commended federal agents and local police.

“[These attacks are] not just putting law enforcement in danger," Banks said in an interview on Fox News. "They're putting civilians in danger, because when [politicians and immigration activists] encourage these civilians to rise up and act like this, they're going up against highly-trained law enforcement officers, and they're gonna find themselves in the same situation that this gentleman found himself in this morning."
