Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a multimillion-dollar federal initiative this week that aims to combat the growing presence of microplastics in the human body.

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. called microplastics a “turning point” for public health in an April 2 press conference.

“We do not yet understand how these particles interact with the immune system, the endocrine system, or the neurological system and we do not have validated methods to remove them safely,” he said.

Microplastics are defined as plastic particles about the size of a pencil eraser or smaller, which pollute oceans, air, soil, and food chains, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration <a href="https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/microplastics.html">website</a>, and their source includes synthetic clothing fibers that are shed during washing, tire abrasion on roads, personal care products, and debris in water systems.

HHS will work alongside top officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to jointly tackle microplastics as a measurable and escalating health threat, according to Kennedy.

The $144 million national program that Kennedy introduced on Thursday is called Systematic Targeting of Microplastics (STOMP) and will be administered through the HHS Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H).

“Not all microplastics behave the same,” he said. “Different materials accumulate in different organs and appear to drive different biological effects. Without that distinction, there is no roadmap for action. We can't treat or we cannot measure. We cannot regulate what we don't understand.”

Concentrations in the brain equate by mass to about a spoonful of plastic in every human, according to a 2025 Nature Medicine study, and a University of Victoria study published in Environmental Science & Technology found that the average person consumes between 74,000 and 121,000 microplastic particles annually through food, water, and air.

The STOMP program will measure, map, and mitigate the effects of microplastics in the body with tools capable of detecting and quantifying microplastics across tissue and fluids with precision.

“We will map out how microplastics move through the body, how they cross biological barriers like the gut lining and the blood brain barrier, where they accumulate and how long they persist,” Kennedy said.

Next steps include developing targeted clinically safe strategies to reduce the microplastic burden in the body while prioritizing pregnant women, workers in high exposure environments, and patients with chronic conditions.

“The science has not kept pace with the scale of exposure,” Kennedy added. “We are now going to close that gap. We are bringing together engineers, clinicians, toxicologists, and data scientists. We are holding ourselves accountable for results.”
