Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was transported by ambulance to a Washington-area hospital on Tuesday after suffering an allergic reaction, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin told NTD that Noem was taken to the hospital “out of an abundance of caution” and is “alert and recovering.”

Noem, 53, was appointed by President Donald Trump as Homeland Security secretary just days after his second-term election victory and was confirmed by the Senate in late January. She previously served as South Dakota’s governor and as a member of Congress representing the state.

Noem has been tasked with carrying out Trump's agenda to crackdown on illegal immigration.

The hospitalization comes shortly after a contentious <a href="https://www.ntd.com/democratic-sen-alex-padilla-interrupts-noems-press-conference-forcibly-removed_1073348.html">incident</a> during a Los Angeles press conference on June 12, where Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) was forcibly removed and briefly restrained by federal agents after interrupting Noem’s remarks.

Padilla attempted to ask a question about immigration enforcement and recent protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Los Angeles before being quickly removed by federal agents and restrained in a hallway outside.

The Department of Homeland Security stated after the incident that officers believed Padilla was “lunging” toward Noem and failed to identify himself or display his Senate pin, leading them to view him as a threat.

Padilla and several Democrats have disputed this account, citing video evidence they say contradicts the department’s version of events. Video footage reportedly shows Padilla walking toward Noem while attempting to ask a question before law enforcement intervened.

As he was escorted out, Padilla said, “I’m Senator Alex Padilla. I have questions for the secretary, because the fact of the matter is, a half a dozen ...” before being pulled from the room.

Noem told Fox LA afterward that she had a “great” conversation with Padilla after the scuffle, but called his approach “something that I don’t think was appropriate at all.”

Earlier this year Noem’s purse was stolen on Easter Sunday while she was out to dinner with her family. The purse reportedly contained about $3,000 in cash, her keys, driver’s license, passport, and Homeland Security badge. The Homeland Security Department said Noem had cash in her purse to pay for gifts, dinner and other activities for her family on Easter.

A suspect was later arrested in connection with the theft and has been charged in federal court with aggravated identity theft, robbery and fraud.
