The Hong Kong authorities are moving to seize millions in assets from jailed media tycoon Jimmy Lai.

A High Court filing shows the government is seeking to confiscate more than $16 million from the freedom advocate and founder of the now-shuttered Apple Daily.

Lai, 78, was sentenced on Feb. 9 by the court, which handles Beijing's so-called national security cases, to a harsh 20-years imprisonment for two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and one count of conspiracy to publish seditious publications—a decision that drew widespread international criticism. Six former colleagues at Apple Daily were also met with prison sentences.
