One of the most powerful hurricane landfalls ever recorded in the Atlantic basin just happened in Jamaica, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in southwest Jamaica near New Hope around 1 p.m. ET on Oct. 28, as a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane, boasting maximum sustained winds of 185 mph.

The National Hurricane Center sent one last <a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCUAT3+shtml/281558.shtml?">warning</a> at 12 p.m. stating, “THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING SITUATION.”

“Do not leave your shelter as the eye passes over, as winds will quickly, and rapidly increase on the other side of the eye. Residents should remain in place through the passage of these life-threatening conditions.”

Landfall only refers to the storm’s eye coming over land, and Hurricane Melissa’s destruction began descending upon the island days before. Tropical Storm-force winds (39 mph – 73 mph) extended nearly 200 miles away from the storm’s center, and hurricane-force winds (74 mph and greater) were recorded 30 miles away.

Melissa is the strongest storm to hit the island since record-keeping began 174 years ago.

Roughly one hour after making landfall, the hurricane was spotted crossing western Jamaica at 8 mph, 20 miles south-southwest of Montego Bay. Its maximum sustained winds were already reduced to 165 mph. However, those winds still make it a dangerous Category 5 hurricane.

“There is no infrastructure in the region that can withstand a Category 5,” Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said during a press conference hours before the storm. “The question now is the speed of recovery. That’s the challenge.”

The National Hurricane Center advised Jamaicans to put as many walls between themselves and the outside as possible to protect themselves from the wind, even suggesting they cover themselves with a mattress and wear a helmet for added protection.

Maximum sustained winds were clocked at 185 mph just a few hours before landfall, making Melissa an extremely powerful Category 5 hurricane. Along with the wind, 15 to 30 inches of rain are expected to fall on portions of the island, with some areas receiving as much as 40 inches.

The center stated that “total structural failures” due to catastrophic winds were likely near the path of Melissa’s center. The rest of the island was expected to experience catastrophic flash flooding and landslides, causing power and communication outages, infrastructural damage, and isolating some communities.

“Total structural failure is likely near the path of Melissa, especially in higher elevation areas where wind speeds atop and on the windward sides of hills and mountains could be up to 30 percent stronger,” the National Hurricane Center <a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCDAT3+shtml/261459.shtml?">warned</a>. “Do not venture out in the eye as winds will rapidly increase within the backside of the eyewall.”

Michael Brennan, director of the National Hurricane Center, warned that Jamaica’s highest mountains could see wind gusts of up to 200 mph.

“It’s just a catastrophic situation playing out here for Jamaica,” he said.

<a href="https://x.com/Unitedcajunnavy/status/1983162177860378867" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Videos</a> posted to social media already showed flash flooding and intense winds roaring.

More than 130 shelters were open across the island as of Oct. 27, and mandatory evacuations were posted for seven communities, including Port Royal, Kingston; Portland Cottage and Rocky Point in Clarendon; Old Harbour Bay, St. Catherine; and Riverton, New Haven, Taylor Land, Bull Bay, St. Andrew.

Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport and Ocho Rios’s Ian Fleming International Airport closed on Oct. 25, and Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport planned to close at noon on Oct. 26.

Disaster response and recovery teams were able to stage themselves on the island ahead of Melissa’s arrival.

“Our teams are on the ground in Jamaica right now,” the United Cajun Navy said in an Oct. 27 <a href="https://x.com/Unitedcajunnavy/status/1982937890620580231" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">X post</a>. The U.S.-based group of volunteer boat owners assists in search and rescue efforts.

“We’re surveying neighborhoods, assessing potential needs, and familiarizing themselves with the areas that will be hardest hit. These are the communities standing in the path of Hurricane Melissa,” the group said.

Melissa’s center is expected to complete its cross over Jamaica by Oct. 29, but it will not stop there.

The National Hurricane Center expected Melissa to move on to Santiago de Cuba and eastern Cuba overnight, still as a major hurricane. Haiti, the Bahamas, and Turks and Caicos will also be affected.

“Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin in eastern Cuba this afternoon, with hurricane conditions expected in the hurricane warning area starting tonight into Wednesday morning,” the center warned in its 11 a.m. advisory on Oct. 28. “Tropical storm conditions are expected in Haiti later today and Wednesday.

“Hurricane conditions are expected in the southeastern and central Bahamas on Wednesday. Tropical storm conditions are expected and hurricane conditions are possible in the Turks and Caicos Islands on Wednesday.”

In terms of rainfall, Cuba was expected to receive as much as 20 inches of rain, with some areas getting 25 inches, potentially causing flash flooding and landslides. The southern Bahamas were expected to get up to 10 inches of rain.

A storm surge of as much as 12 feet could hit Cuba, and an eight-foot surge could hit the southern Bahamas.
