Former special counsel Jack Smith will testify publicly next Thursday about his investigations into President Donald Trump.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chair of the House Judiciary Committee, confirmed Smith’s testimony will be held on Jan. 22 at 10 a.m.

“He’ll be a tough witness, but we’re going to present the facts, and I think, frankly, we’re going to show that Jack Smith was part of this bigger effort” to bring down Trump, Jordan said during an <a href="https://x.com/seanhannity/status/2010934728732336258?s=20">interview</a> with Fox News on Monday.

Smith, a former Justice Department official and veteran prosecutor, led the investigation into classified documents at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida in 2022. Smith also probed Trump’s efforts to challenge the 2020 presidential election results after losing to Joe Biden.

The two investigations resulted in indictments against Trump. The <a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-capitol-riot-justice-department-jack-smith-d6172cf98d8e03e099571c908267456c">criminal cases</a> were later abandoned after Trump won the 2024 presidential election.

During the public testimony, House lawmakers will be able to question Smith on his Trump-related probes.

Smith has long wanted to testify publicly about the investigations, according to Lanny Breuer, one of Smith’s lawyers.

“Jack has been clear for months he is ready and willing to answer questions in a public hearing about his investigations into President Trump’s alleged unlawful efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his mishandling of classified documents,” Breuer said in a statement.

On Nov. 18, 2022, Smith was appointed special counsel by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland, three days after Trump launched his candidacy for a second presidential term.

Garland, in his announcement at the time, said that such an appointment was necessary due to the "extraordinary circumstances." Smith is impartial and has no political bias, Garland had said, pointing out that he is a registered independent.

“The Department of Justice has long recognized that in certain extraordinary cases, it is in the public’s interest to appoint a special prosecutor to independently manage an investigation and prosecution,” Garland <a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-donald-trump-merrick-garland-government-and-550c01de053c08db4d53ca57f315feb6">said</a>.

Trump at the time described the special counsel appointment as a “horrendous abuse of power.”

Smith’s public testimony next week follows his closed-door deposition last month.

According to transcripts from that private testimony, Smith told lawmakers that the Jan. 6, 2021, demonstration at the U.S. Capitol “does not happen” without Trump. He also dismissed suggestions that his investigations were aimed at keeping Trump out of the White House.

“So in terms of why we would pursue a case against him, I entirely disagree with any characterization that our work was in any way meant to hamper him in the presidential election,” Smith said during the private deposition, according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/congress-jack-smith-testifies-jordan-jan-6-49e4b35fc45f4e3b3affe5afdee46044">transcripts</a>.
