Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met her Italian counterpart, Georgia Meloni, in Tokyo on Friday as the two countries aim to strengthen ties.

The visit comes as Japan and Italy mark 160 years of diplomatic relations, which began in 1866.

Speaking in Tokyo, Takaichi told reporters that the occasion was an opportunity to “elevate” the relationship between the two countries.

Meloni said the two leaders had agreed to work together to strengthen supply chains, highlighting a focus on critical minerals.
