Chinese and Japanese vessels faced off in disputed waters near Taiwan on Tuesday.

Japan says the two Chinese patrol ships sailed toward a Japanese fishing boat, and left after a warning from a Japanese coast guard vessel.

China gave a different account of the confrontation. It said a Japanese fishing vessel had illegally entered the waters of the Senaku Islands before being expelled.

In addition, China cancelled 40 percent of scheduled flights to Japan.
