Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) on Monday launched her bid for the U.S. Senate.

Crockett, 44, filed her candidacy with the Texas Democratic Party on Monday, officially vying for the seat now held by Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas).

The two-term congresswoman jumped into the race on the final day of qualifying in Texas.

Crockett, a former public defender and civil rights attorney, has represented Texas’ 30th congressional district since January 2023. She currently serves on the House Oversight and House Judiciary Committees. Crockett was the founding member of the Texas Progressive Caucus.

The Texas congresswoman has been considered a rising star in the Democratic party and has publicly opposed President Donald Trump and prominent conservative voices.

Her announcement to run for Senate comes after former Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) announced earlier in the day that he was exiting the Senate race and running instead for the redrawn 33rd congressional House district in North Texas.

Allred in his announcement didn’t mention Crockett or state Rep. James Talarico in his explanation.

Talario had already entered the Senate race in September.

But Allred’s decision ultimately paved the way for Crockett to run for the Senate seat.

“In the past few days, I’ve come to believe that a bruising Senate Democratic primary and runoff would prevent the Democratic Party from going into this critical election unified against the danger posed to our communities and our Constitution by Donald Trump and one of his Republican bootlickers Paxton, Cornyn, or Hunt,” Allred said in a <a href="https://x.com/ColinAllredTX/status/1998015894878830941?s=20">statement</a>. “That’s why I’ve made the difficult decision to end my campaign for the U.S. Senate.”

Ahead of her announcement, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a response to her bid in deep-red Texas.

“Jasmine Crockett  about to learn the hard way that most Texans are very different from her district, her base & her values,” the governor <a href="https://x.com/GregAbbott_TX/status/1997767403275448507">wrote on X.</a> “She’ll be pummeled for her progressive socialist agenda & get crushed by the Republican nominee for Senate. The Texas political cemetery is filled with blow hards like her who have no idea what it’s like to run statewide.”

Republicans also expect a <a href="https://apnews.com/article/senate-election-2026-texas-hunt-cornyn-paxton-450ee0f067273ca75de9268cf928d0be">hotly contested primary</a> among incumbent Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), state Attorney General Ken Paxton and Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas).

Democrats need a net gain of four Senate seats to gain control from Republicans next November and have long hoped to make Texas more competitive after decades of Republican dominance.
