A JetBlue flight arriving from Chicago skidded off the runway and came to a stop in the grass at Boston Logan International Airport on Thursday, prompting a quick emergency response and a temporary ground stop, according to the Massachusetts Port Authority.

JetBlue Airways Flight 312, an Airbus A220, was landing at Logan when it veered off the runway while turning, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The incident occurred at approximately 11:55 a.m. local time, the FAA said in a June 12 <a href="https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/statements/accident_incidents">statement</a>.

No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew, according to Samantha Decker, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Port Authority.

Emergency vehicles quickly surrounded the plane, and passengers got off using mobile stairs provided by first responders, according to an Associated Press journalist at the scene. The airport authority arranged for buses to transport passengers from the aircraft to the terminal, Decker said in an email.

The runway where the incident occurred was closed Thursday afternoon as crews assessed the situation and worked to move the aircraft. The closure led to a ground stop, halting other flights at Logan while the response was underway, Decker said.

JetBlue confirmed the incident in a statement Thursday, saying, “JetBlue flight 312 from Chicago to Boston veered off the runway and onto the grass after landing. We will conduct a full investigation of the incident and will work closely with the relevant authorities to understand the cause.”

NTD reached out to Jet Blue and the Massachusetts Port Authority, but didn’t hear back by publication.

The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident, according to a spokesperson for the agency. As of Thursday afternoon, officials had not released further details regarding what may have caused the plane to veer off the runway.

Thursday’s runway excursion comes amid heightened scrutiny of air travel safety. Federal officials recently acknowledged <a href="https://www.ntd.com/faa-admits-error-in-dc-plane-helicopter-collision-vows-fixes_1056955.html">challenges</a> in maintaining air safety standards. A recent poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found a decline in Americans’ confidence in flying this year.

In May, a Republic Airways jet was forced to abort its takeoff to avoid a United Airlines plane that was still crossing the runway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, the FAA said at the time.

LaGuardia is equipped with the FAA’s most advanced surface radar system, known as ASDE-X, which is designed to help prevent runway incursions by allowing controllers to track planes and vehicles on the ground. However, the May 6 incident demonstrates that even the best available technology is not perfect.

Across the United States, only 35 airports have this advanced system, while controllers at the remaining 490 towered airports rely on less sophisticated tools, such as binoculars, due to the high cost of the technology.

The number of close calls at U.S. airports has been a persistent concern for the FAA, National Transportation Safety Board, and aviation safety experts. According to the FAA, the rate of runway incursions per million takeoffs and landings has stayed around 30 for the past decade, peaking at 35 in 2017 and 2018.

Most years see fewer than 20 of the most serious incidents—those where a collision was narrowly avoided or there was significant potential for a crash. The number of such serious events reached 22 in 2023 and dropped to seven last year, the FAA reported.

Efforts are underway to develop systems that would alert pilots directly about runway traffic, rather than relying solely on controllers to relay warnings. The FAA has not yet certified such a system, though the technology and manufacturing company Honeywell International has been working on one for several years.
