A prominent Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor died Tuesday morning after being shot at his home the previous night.

The Norfolk District Attorney's Office confirmed Tuesday that 47-year-old Nuno F.G. Loureiro was transported to an area hospital with apparent gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead Tuesday morning.

Massachusetts State Police and the Brookline Police Department responded Monday to a report of a man shot at his residence on Gibbs Street, the DA’s office said in a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/NorfolkDistrictAttorneysOffice">post</a> on Facebook.

Loureiro was a physicist and fusion scientist who joined MIT in 2016, and was selected to head the Plasma Science and Fusion Center just over a year ago. The research facility is one of MIT's largest operations, employing more than 250 researchers, support staff, and graduate students within seven separate laboratory facilities. A Portuguese national from Viseu, Loureiro studied in Lisbon and received his doctoral degree in London, according to MIT records.

Dennis Whyte, the previous director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center, told campus media that Loureiro "shone a bright light as a mentor, friend, teacher, colleague, and leader, and was universally admired for his articulate, compassionate manner." MIT's president, Sally Kornbluth, released a statement describing Loureiro's death as a "shocking loss."

As of Tuesday afternoon, investigators had not arrested any individuals in connection with the shooting.

The DA’s office noted that no further information is being released for the moment.

A Boston University junior living near Loureiro's three-story brick apartment building reported hearing what she believed to be gunshots on Monday night. "I had never heard anything so loud, so I assumed they were gunshots," the student, Liv Schachner, told The Boston Globe. Faculty and student colleagues of Loureiro gathered at his home Tuesday in mourning, according to reporting by the Globe.

Portugal's U.S. ambassador, John J. Arrigo, released a <a href="https://x.com/USEmbPortugal/status/2000979302976831640?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">statement</a> Tuesday regarding Loureiro’s death.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Nuno Loureiro, who led MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center. We honor his life, his leadership in science, and his enduring contributions,” Arrigo wrote.

Loureiro became director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center in May, taking charge of an operation in 250,000 square feet of research space. He assumed the position following the departure of Dennis Whyte, who left the role at year's end 2023 to resume academic pursuits.

Loureiro's scholarly work focused on understanding various dimensions of plasma dynamics, with particular emphasis on turbulent phenomena and physical mechanisms driving solar eruptions and comparable cosmic events. His contributions to fusion research involved creating more advanced designs for fusion reactors capable of managing plasma energy with superior efficiency, MIT News said in a <a href="https://news.mit.edu/2024/nuno-loureiro-named-director-mit-plasma-science-fusion-center-0501">press release</a> last year announcing his appointment.

Scientists and others have been pursuing fusion energy due to its advantages of having zero greenhouse gas output, abundant fuel supplies, and the impossibility of catastrophic facility failures. Progress in the field has accelerated markedly during the past decade, facilitated by technological breakthroughs including advanced superconducting magnetic systems created at the PSFC.

Upon his appointment as director, Loureiro declared, "It's not hyperbole to say MIT is where you go to find solutions to humanity's biggest problems. Fusion energy will change the course of human history."

The homicide investigation coincides with an ongoing manhunt in Providence, Rhode Island, roughly 50 miles away, where authorities are seeking a suspect responsible for fatally shooting two individuals at Brown University and wounding nine others on Saturday. The FBI said Tuesday they have identified no connection linking the two incidents.
