Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn still plans to compete at the 2026 Games despite a serious injury.

Vonn crashed while competing at a downhill ski race in Switzerland. She completely tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and sustained other damage to her left knee. But despite the setbacks, Vonn said at a press conference Feb. 3 that she feels confident in her ability to compete on Sunday, Feb. 8.

"[W]e have been doing extensive therapy and consulting with doctors, been in the gym, and today, I went skiing," Vonn said. "Considering how my knee feels—it feels stable, I feel strong, my knee is not swollen—and with the help of a knee brace, I am confident that I can compete on Sunday. This is obviously not what I had hoped for. I've been working really hard to come into these Games in a much different position. I know what my chances were before the crash, and I know my chances aren't the same as they stand today. But I know there's still a chance, and as long as there's a chance, I will try."

Vonn was competing at the Crans-Montana Downhill World Cup in Switzerland last week when she <a href="https://www.ntd.com/us-skier-lindsey-vonn-crashes-in-final-downhill-race-before-2026-winter-games_1122926.html">lost control</a> during a jump and got tangled up in the safety netting at the start of the course; but she was able to make it to the end of the course where she was subsequently airlifted to a local hospital for evaluation.

According to the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), the Women's event was cancelled after two other women—Austrian Nina Ortlieb and Norwegian Marte Monsen—did not finish the course and six racers struggled to complete the course due to decreased visibility. Conditions had changed even from the morning inspection of the course.

In an Instagram <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DUTSTCvDdIp/?hl=en&img_index=1">post</a> Monday, Vonn revealed that she had completely tore her ACL and suffered a bone bruise and meniscal tears; but it was not immediately evident how much of the damage was from the crash or previous injuries. Having consulted with her medical team and training staff, she determined that if she was able to complete a practice run—which is required for her to compete—she would be able to run the Alpine Skiing Women's Downhill event on Sunday.

Vonn recounted previous injuries she suffered, including the 2019 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, when she medaled despite suffering a torn lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and three fractures of the tibial plateau in her right knee. And while the practice run was not an accurate barometer for her performance on race day, she said her knee feels better than other injuries she has tested in the gym or on the hill.

"I've always pushed the limits, and in downhill, it's a very dangerous sport—anything can happen," she said. "And because I push those limits, I crash, and I've been injured more times than I would like to admit, to myself even. But those are the cards I've been dealt in my life, and I'm going to play them the best that I can ... [A]s many times as I crash, I’ve always gotten back up. As many times as I’ve failed, I’ve always won.

"Thankfully, all of my experience in life has given me a lot of confidence in knowing what my body can and cannot do. I have been in this position before. I know how to handle it. I’ve been on the world stage before. I know how to handle that. So everything together, even though I don’t want to be in this position, I know how to be in this position, and I can handle it."
