Last week, President Donald Trump announced sweeping global tariffs, including a baseline 10 percent tariff on all U.S. trading partners and higher reciprocal tariffs on several dozen countries described by White House officials as the “worst offenders” in terms of high tariff and non-tariff barriers to trade. Global and domestic stock markets have plummeted in the days following, and China has retaliated with 34 percent tariffs on all U.S. goods. Critics say Trump is hurting U.S. consumers and businesses and potentially triggering a global recession.
