Malcolm-Jamal Warner, known for his portrayal of Theo Huxtable on the sitcom “The Cosby Show,” died Sunday at the age of 54 after accidentally drowning while swimming off Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast.

Officials with the country’s Judicial Investigation Department said Warner was pulled by a current at Playa Cocles in Limon province. Despite being rescued by beachgoers and treated by the Red Cross, he was found without a pulse and later taken to the morgue.

Warner’s rise to fame began at age 13 when he was cast in the role of Theo Huxtable. As the only son among four children in the Huxtable household, the character quickly became a central figure on a show that defined a generation and held the top spot in American television ratings for years.

Over eight seasons from 1984 to 1992, Warner appeared in all 197 episodes and became a symbol for American teenage boyhood during the era.

His depiction delivered moments that remain embedded in pop culture, such as a memorable debate with Bill Cosby’s character over the realities of family finances and another episode where Theo tries to hide an ear piercing from his father.

One famous image is Theo wearing a mock designer shirt stitched by his sister Denise, portrayed by Lisa Bonet. That shirt, dubbed the “Gordon Gartrell,” later achieved meme status and appeared in popular culture references, including a comedic recreation by Anthony Mackie on “The Tonight Show” and as Warner’s Instagram profile picture showing a toddler in a similar shirt.
<h2>Reaction From Celebrities</h2>
Tributes poured out as news of Warner’s passing spread. NBA legend Magic Johnson <a href="https://x.com/MagicJohnson/status/1947364380884275405">posted</a> on X that he and his wife were “super fans of the hit ‘Cosby Show’ and continued to follow his career on shows like ‘Malcolm & Eddie’ and ‘The Resident.’”

Johnson described Warner as a friend, sharing: “Every time I ran into Malcolm, we would have deep and fun conversations about basketball, life, and business. He will truly be missed.”

Eddie Griffin, Warner’s co-star on the UPN sitcom “Malcolm & Eddie,” said in his own <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DMYkxerznc3/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==">post</a> on Instagram: “My Heart is heavy today… You’ve taught me so much and I thank you Rest Well My Big little Brother.”

Tracee Ellis Ross, who starred alongside Warner in “Read Between The Lines,” wrote in her own <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DMYaVaqSR14/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==">tribute</a> on Instagram: “First I met you as Theo with the rest of the world then you were my first TV husband. My heart is so so sad. What an actor and friend you were: warm, gentle, present, kind, thoughtful, deep, funny, elegant.”
<h2>A Career Beyond Theo Huxtable</h2>
After “The Cosby Show,” Warner established himself as a versatile performer. He starred as half of the title duo in the sitcom “Malcolm & Eddie,” which ran from 1996 to 2000.

In the 2010s, he returned to primetime as part of BET’s “Read Between The Lines,” played Al Cowlings in “American Crime Story,” and was a series regular on Fox’s “The Resident.” Additionally, Warner made notable film appearances, including the romantic comedy “Fool’s Gold,” alongside Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson.

Music and poetry were other creative outlets for Warner. He earned a Grammy for best traditional R&B performance and received a nomination in the best spoken word poetry album category for “Hiding in Plain View.” His creative reach extended to directing, where he helmed episodes of “Malcolm & Eddie,” “Read Between the Lines,” “Kenan & Kel,” and “All That.”
<h2>Personal and Professional Challenges</h2>
Warner’s career and the legacy of “The Cosby Show” were complicated by publicized sexual assault allegations against Bill Cosby, whose conviction was later overturned.

Warner addressed the controversy in a 2015 interview, saying: “My biggest concern is when it comes to images of people of color on television and film. We’ve always had ‘The Cosby Show’ to hold up against that. And the fact that we no longer have that, that’s the thing that saddens me the most because in a few generations the Huxtables will have been just a fairy tale.”
<h2>Early Life and Private Years</h2>
Malcolm-Jamal Warner was born in 1970 in Jersey City, New Jersey. His mother Pamela Warner managed his early career, which began when he was 9 years old. His first major television work included guest spots on “Matt Houston” and “Fame.”

Having married over a decade ago and fathered a young daughter, Warner kept his family life private and chose not to share their names publicly.

His last television appearances included guest roles in “The Wonder Years,” “Grown-ish,” and last year’s four-episode arc on “9-1-1.”

Reflecting on the arc of his life and career, Warner once said in a 2015 interview: “I grew up with a maniacal obsession with not wanting to be one of those ‘where are they now kids.’ I feel very blessed to be able to have all of these avenues of expression ... to be where I am now and finally at a place where I can let go of that worry about having a life after ‘Cosby.’”
