A 49-year-old Georgia man was arrested at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Monday following a family tip that he intended to commit a mass shooting at the facility, according to Atlanta's top police officer.

Billy Joe Cagle of Cartersville faces multiple charges after authorities found an AR-15 rifle and ammunition in his vehicle parked outside the terminal, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said during a Monday news conference. The police chief said Cagle, a convicted felon, had spoken of his intentions during a social media livestream before arriving at the airport.

Schierbaum said authorities first learned of the threat when the Cartersville Police Department was contacted by Cagle's relatives, who reported watching him stream online about heading to Atlanta's airport to "shoot it up" with an assault rifle.

The suspect drove a Chevrolet pickup truck to the airport, parking directly outside the terminal entrance. After inspecting the vehicle, officers found the AR-15, which contained 27 rounds of ammunition.

"We're here today briefing you on a success and not a tragedy because a family saw something and said something," Schierbaum said.

Cartersville Police Capt. Greg Sparacio, whose department initially received the family's report, said Cagle "had the intention to inflict harm to as many people as he could."

Surveillance footage shows Cagle's vehicle arriving at the terminal curb around 9:30 a.m. Video shows the suspect entering the airport minutes later and approaching the TSA security checkpoint.

Body camera footage released shows Atlanta officers—who had received a photograph of Cagle from his family members—approaching and questioning him before making the arrest. According to the video, Cagle can be heard yelling as officers brought him to the ground and placed him in handcuffs.

Cagle faces four charges: making terroristic threats, criminal attempt to commit aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

He remained in custody on Monday. Atlanta authorities plan to collaborate with federal agencies to investigate how Cagle obtained the weapon, "which he was not able to legally possess," Schierbaum said.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens credited divine intervention and effective communication for preventing disaster.

"We're thankful to God and to good information, and good intel, and good people for this crisis being averted," the mayor said.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem addressed the incident in a <a href="https://x.com/Sec_Noem/status/1980374829749661717">post</a> on X.

"I am thankful this individual was taken into custody by law enforcement before harming anyone," Noem said on Monday, noting that her department is in communication with interagency partners regarding the incident and will share information as it becomes available.
