A 28-year-old man accused of killing an Arkansas couple who were hiking at a state park has been arrested and charged, according to Arkansas State Police (ASP).

James Andrew McGann was arrested at a business in Springdale on Wednesday around 5 p.m. He faces two counts of capital murder, police said in a <a href="https://dps.arkansas.gov/news/asp-arrests-suspect-indevils-den-double-homicide/">press release.</a>

Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, were hiking with their two young children at the Devil's Den State Park in northwestern Arkansas when they were suddenly attacked on July 26.

Police declined to release specific details about how the couple was assaulted. Authorities believe the person who targeted the couple was likely injured during the attack. Their bodies were found on a walking trail, according to ASP.

The couple's 9- and 7-year-old daughters were not hurt in the attack. The children are now safe with family, police said.

Wednesday's arrest comes after police sought the public's help in identifying a man they described as a person of interest in the double homicide. ASP released a composite sketch and a photo of a man they wanted to question in the case. Police were also looking for a vehicle with a license plate covered by electrical or duct tape that was spotted toward the park's exit.

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders previously urged the public to come forward with any tips. She issued a statement on Wednesday's arrest.

“No news can heal the enormous harm done to the Brink family in last weekend’s crime, but this announcement is a comfort and reassurance for our State," the governor said.

"I am so proud of the Arkansas State Police, Park Rangers, local law enforcement, and others who have worked nonstop since last weekend to capture this suspect," she said.

"I ask that Arkansans lift up prayers of thanks for the brave men and women of law enforcement – and offer prayers of condolence to the victims of this horrific crime.

"Let there be no mistake—we do not tolerate violent crime in Arkansas. If you target innocent people, law enforcement will hunt you down and bring you to justice.”

ASP said it was "working around the clock" along with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to resolve the case.

“I’m extremely grateful for the long hours and dedication that our Agents put forward in bringing justice to this family," Col. Mike Hagar said in a <a href="https://dps.arkansas.gov/news/asp-arrests-suspect-indevils-den-double-homicide/">statement.</a>

"The collaboration between State Police, other state and local law enforcement agencies, and our federal partners has been second to none. Because of their hard work and investigative skill, we were able to take a monster off the streets, and bring relief to those two precious girls, and the rest of our citizens.”

The slain couple's family, through police, issued a statement about the incident.

Authorities have not yet released a motive for the killings. Police said additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
