Federal authorities have seized 50,000 kilograms of methamphetamine ingredients at the Port of Long Beach in California.

The bust happened on May 30, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The shipment originated from China and was destined for the Sinaloa Drug Cartel in Mexico.

The massive shipment was filled with di-cumyl peroxide, a chemical precursor used by drug traffickers to produce methamphetamines and other illicit narcotics, authorities said.

An ICE initiative launched in 2019 led to this latest major seizure, according to ICE Homeland Security Investigations Houston Special Agent in Charge Chad Plantz.

“For far too long, the Mexican drug cartels have raked in billions of dollars at the expense of our local communities leaving nothing but addiction, death and despair in their wake,” Plantz said in a <a href="https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/ice-cbp-seize-50000-kilograms-meth-precursor-chemicals-destined-sinaloa-cartel">statement</a>. “This initiative provides HSI with a game-changing method to stay one step ahead of the cartels by disrupting the flow of chemicals that they depend on to produce illicit narcotics.

The initiative has boosted the agency’s ability to target illicit cross-border trade using sophisticated analytical tools and techniques. The leveraged expertise, authorities said, allows federal agencies to successfully track shipments of chemical precursors from China, India, and other source countries that are destined for Mexican drug cartels.

More than 1,700,000 kilograms of chemicals used to manufacture methamphetamines and fentanyl have been interdicted since the initiative was first launched.

Authorities credit the initiative to the recent seizure of nearly 44,000 kilograms of glacial acetic acid at the Port of Houston. That massive shipment of drugs was also bound for the Sinaloa Cartel.

The initiative has also helped expose the location of illicit drug labs in Mexico. As a result, 13 drug labs operated by a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel have been located and dismantled since January 2025, according to ICE and CBP.

The day before the drug seizure at the Port of Long Beach, federal agencies seized <a href="https://www.news.uscg.mil/Press-Releases/Article/4200564/coast-guard-offloads-more-than-211-million-in-illicit-drug-interdictions-in-the/">28,500 pounds</a> of cocaine worth an estimated $211.3 million at the Port of Everglades north of Miami. The U.S. Coast Guard said the drugs were being transported on several different vessels and headed for the United States.

Drug traffickers are looking for other locations to transport drugs to the United States since security is now tighter at the southern border, according to ICE.

"With security levels at the southern border at an all-time high, drug trafficking organizations are seeking other entry points to smuggle their deadly narcotics into the United States," <a href="https://x.com/HSIHouston/status/1929642315125346388">Plantz said</a>. "Despite their best efforts they are quickly finding out that it doesn't matter which domain they attempt to exploit, we will be there waiting to shut it down and hold them accountable."

Following President Donald Trump's Jan. 20 executive order, Secretary of State Marco Rubio designated eight organizations, including the Sinaloa Cartel, as both a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

On his first day in office, Trump issued the executive order aimed at combating drug trafficking and dismantling foreign criminal networks by initiating a process for designating drug cartels as global terrorists. The directive states that international cartels pose a national security threat that goes beyond traditional organized crime.
