A California parole board is set to determine the fate of convicted murderers Erik and Lyle Menendez.

The Menendez brothers will attend their highly anticipated parole hearings after spending nearly 30 years in prison for killing their parents.

The board will consider each of their releases separately.

Erik is scheduled to attend his hearing on Thursday at 8:30 a.m., while Lyle's hearing is scheduled for Friday at 8:30 a.m. local time, according to a <a href="https://www.cdcr.ca.gov/bph/2025/02/05/august-2025-hearing-calendar/">calendar</a> by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The board will examine whether they pose an unreasonable risk of danger to society if they are released. Criminal history, motivation for the crime, signs of remorse, behavior in prison, and plans for the future are among the factors the board will take into consideration.

In May, a Los Angeles judge reduced their sentences from life in prison without the possibility of parole to 50 years to life, making the brothers immediately eligible for parole under state law since they were under the age of 26 at the time of the murders.

Erik was 18 and Lyle was 21 when they shot their father, Jose Menendez, and mother, Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills mansion in 1989.

The brothers are represented by renowned attorney Mark Geragos, who said in an <a href="https://www.newsnationnow.com/crime/menendez-brothers-family-says-deserve-release-ahead-of-parole-hearings/">interview</a> with NewsNation that both are expected to face a lot of questions from the parole board.

Geragos said the brothers will likely discuss their positive contributions, such as the hospice program Erik "pioneered" and Lyle's space program.

He also noted that there's a possibility that one could be released while the other is not, although he suggested those results are unlikely.

Even if the board grants their parole, it could still be months before the brothers are actually released—if at all.  A chief legal counsel has 120 days to review the case if the parole board approves their release.

After that, California Gov. Gavin Newsom has another 30 days to affirm or deny their parole. But the brothers need Newsom's official approval to walk free.

The parole panel consists of two or three parole hearing officers from a board of commissioners appointed by the governor.

The Justice for Erik and Lyle Coalition released a <a href="https://www.justiceforerikandlyle.org/news/family-led-initiative-issues-statement-ahead-of-parole-hearings">statement</a> ahead of the first hearing, saying, in part:

“As always, our family remains cautiously optimistic, grounding ourselves in the reality that California’s parole process is incredibly rigorous, with low grant rates," the coalition stated. "We respect that and know Erik and Lyle are prepared for that level of scrutiny.

"For more than 35 years, they have shown sustained growth. They’ve taken full accountability. They express sincere remorse to our family to this day and have built a meaningful life defined by purpose and service."

Their high-profile case captured national attention. The brothers went through two trials, the first of which ended in a hung jury and the second of which resulted in their guilty convictions for first-degree murder.

They claimed they acted in self-defense after years of being sexually abused by their father. The prosecution, however, argued that the brothers murdered their parents for financial gain.
