The Coast Guard says it helped prevent a potential tragedy at sea, after intercepting an overcrowded migrant boat that was carrying 240 people near the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean. Authorities say the vessel was packed with migrants who identified themselves as Haitian citizens.

The boat was taking on water and in danger of sinking when it was spotted. More than 140 Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection, and local personnel took part in the operation. Officials say the operation prevented what could have been a catastrophic loss of life.
