More than 60 shipping containers plunged into the water Tuesday morning at the Port of Long Beach after falling from a cargo vessel, prompting a temporary shutdown at one of the nation's busiest maritime facilities.

The containers tumbled from a ship called the Mississippi just before 9 a.m., according to Port of Long Beach spokesperson Art Marroquin, who confirmed no injuries occurred during the incident.

The U.S. Coast Guard reported on the social media platform X that approximately 67 containers were floating in the water following the mishap, according to an updated <a href="https://x.com/USCGNorCal/status/1965475777983795498">report</a> from USCGNorCal.

Several of the fallen containers appeared to have landed on the STAX 2, which was described as an anti-pollution vessel that was attached to the Mississippi's side to catch emissions. Individual containers can weigh between two to four metric tons when empty, depending on their size.

The accident forced authorities to temporarily halt loading and unloading operations at Pier G container terminal, one of six terminals operating at the port, while crews worked to secure the floating containers.

The Mississippi operates under Portugal's flag and had recently arrived in Long Beach after leaving from Yantian port in Shenzhen, China, on Aug. 26, according to vessel tracking websites.

The Port of Long Beach, located about 20 miles south of Los Angeles, handles large cargo volumes as one of the country's most active seaports. About 40 percent of all shipping containers entering the United States pass through either the Long Beach port or the nearby Los Angeles port.

Recent months have seen several notable shipping emergencies, including a June <a href="https://www.ntd.com/cargo-ship-carrying-new-vehicles-sinks-in-north-pacific-after-fire-all-crew-rescued_1075501.html">accident</a> where a cargo ship carrying more than 3,000 vehicles sank in the North Pacific Ocean after a fire forced the crew to evacuate.

That ship, the Morning Midas, had been transporting vehicles from China to Mexico when fire broke out about 300 miles southwest of Adak Island, Alaska. All 22 crew members were safely rescued before the ship ultimately sank in water that is approximately 16,404 feet deep.

Another shipping <a href="https://www.ntd.com/cargo-ship-catches-fire-near-baltimore-harbor_1085644.html">accident</a> occurred in August when a cargo ship caught fire near Baltimore's Key Bridge site. The Baltimore City Fire Department responded to the W-Sapphire, a 751-foot bulk carrier that showed "signs of damage consistent with a fire and explosion," according to BCFD spokesman John Marsh. All 23 people aboard that vessel were confirmed safe and uninjured.

In Long Beach, authorities continue working to assess the full scope of the incident and determine recovery plans for the floating containers.

The cause of the container failure aboard the Mississippi remains under investigation.
