Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy met with Republican lawmakers to discuss their plans for the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The DOGE co-chiefs <a href="https://x.com/cspan/status/1864747226007761231">visited Capitol Hill</a> on Thursday for closed-door meetings about major reform ideas with House and Senate Republicans.

Musk and Ramaswamy were chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as cost-cutting advisers and weed out wasteful government spending.

House Speaker Mike Johnson described the meetings on Capitol Hill as a "brainstorm session" with everyone involved in the new department.

"There's an enormous amount of waste, fraud, and abuse in the government and I think everyone knows that intuitively," Johnson <a href="https://x.com/cspan/status/1864749912493064514">told</a> reporters ahead of the meetings. "And so the efforts here, both with our subcommittees that are being created here and with the DOGE effort itself, will be to explore that, to investigate it, and lay it bare for the American people to see."

Johnson cited only 1 percent of federal employees work in the office, excluding janitorial staff and security personnel, according to <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1864702585313349962">estimates</a> from Sen. Joni Ernst’s (R-Iowa) office.

Ernst will chair the Senate DOGE Caucus while Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has been chosen to chair the House DOGE subcommittee.

Ernst said she unveiled her <a href="https://x.com/SenJoniErnst/status/1864814291951468611">report</a> during Thursday's meeting showing the "broken" D.C. bureaucracy. Her two-year investigation exposed bureaucrats "playing golf, sitting in jail, relaxing in a bubble bath, and taking extended beach vacations" while on the clock, <a href="https://x.com/SenJoniErnst/status/1864814299840921916">according to Ernst.</a>

The official DOGE account on X recently published examples of what it called a waste of taxpayer money.

“Federal government agencies are using, on average, just 12 percent of the space in their DC headquarters,” one post reads. “The Department of Agriculture, with space for more than 7,400 people, averaged 456 workers each day (6 percent occupancy). Why are American taxpayer dollars being spent to maintain empty buildings?”

According to the latest <a href="https://fiscaldata.treasury.gov/americas-finance-guide/government-revenue/#:~:text=Sources%20of%20Federal%20Revenue&text=So%20far%20in%20FY%202025,U.S.%20Department%20of%20the%20Interior." target="_blank" rel="noopener">figures</a> from the Treasury Department, most of the revenue the U.S. government collects comes from contributions from individual taxpayers, small businesses, and corporations through taxes. The combined contribution of individual and corporate income taxes totals $181 billion, which represents 55 percent of total revenue in fiscal year 2025.
