New Orleans has boosted its security presence for New Year’s celebrations with National Guard troops authorized by President Donald Trump.

As the city prepares for round-the-clock revelry, 350 National Guard members arrived in New Orleans Tuesday to help with safety measures.

Troops are expected to be confined to New Orleans’ historic French Quarter, a popular attraction known worldwide for New Year’s Eve parties, following last year's deadly truck attack on Bourbon Street.

Officials also stressed that the National Guard won’t be engaging in immigration enforcement, noting that troops’ presence is just another layer of security. Federal agents have been carrying out an illegal immigration crackdown in the city since the start of the month, an operation that has led to the arrest of at least several hundred people in New Orleans.

“This is for visibility and just really to keep our citizens safe,” according to New Orleans police spokesperson Reese Harper.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff <a href="https://x.com/LAGovJeffLandry/status/2003579009897009641?s=20">Landry last week announced</a> that he requested the deployment of 350 National Guard troops to his state to ensure safety during the city's busiest season.

The Guard members will stay through Carnival season, when residents and tourists descend on the city to participate in costumed celebrations and parades before ending with Mardi Gras in mid-February.

"They will be there for New Year's Eve because they will be there for deployment through February, which we desperately need," Landry said. "We know how to make cities safe, and the national guard complements cities that are having high crime problems."

Trump had authorized the deployment of the National Guard to the city following missions launched this year in other cities, including Washington, D.C., and Memphis, Tennessee, as part of his nationwide campaign to crack down on crime and illegal immigration.

The added layer of security comes after the high-profile attack on Bourbon Street hours after revelers rang in the New Year last year. The perpetrator rammed his truck through a police blockade and raced through a crowd along Bourbon Street, where people had gathered to celebrate the New Year.

14 people were killed and 35 were injured. Two police officers were wounded in the shootout with the gunman.

The suspect, who officials said proclaimed his support for ISIS, was killed by police. The man responsible for the attack visited the city twice before and recorded video of the French Quarter with Meta smart glasses, according to the FBI.

The New Year’s 2025 attack had garnered national attention and prompted security concerns in the Big Easy.

But according to officials, the city is well-prepared for its busiest season. National Guard troops have already assisted earlier this year for the other high-profile events, including the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras.
