A further display of solidarity against Beijing was seen when the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, is weighing whether to issue a joint statement with four Indo-Pacific allies.

NATO has about 30 members from North America and Europe, with the U.S. as the leading force.

Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand are the four allies that would co-sign the statement. None are NATO members.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has tabled plans to invite them to a summit this year. That gathering is scheduled for July in Lithuania.

Last June, leaders from the four nations attended a NATO summit—marking a historic first.
