A group of New Yorkers set up a mock-entrance to a Hong Kong metro station in Manhattan. The move marks the one-year anniversary of a violent crackdown in Hong Kong's Prince Edward Station.

Last August, Hong Kong police stormed into the city's Prince Edward Station and beat passengers with batons, saying they were violent radicals.

"This was the first time Hong Kong police just blatantly attacked citizens. I think it’s horrifying, but also sad," Ken Sui told NTD News. "That when the government can’t stop the people, it only knows how to resort to violence instead of listening to people’s hearts.

For Siu, showing support for Hong Kongers carries personal weight. He said one of his best friends in the city was arrested one night on his way home.

"He was tortured afterwards. He was beaten up. He had no injuries before he was detained," said Sui. "Several hours later after he was brought in, he was wounded so badly that he was sent to the hospital."

Siu said that he often took the train the Prince Edward Station when he was in Hong Kong. He says seeing the replica in New York was an emotional experience.

"Places I knew in Hong Kong have become symbols to commemorate those who have been tortured. Actually I feel so sad seeing this," he added. "No words can express my feelings."

At the event in New York, a volunteer told NTD News that although she’s never experienced what happened in Hong Kong first hand, modern technology allows her to see exactly what the Chinese regime has been doing.

"Honestly, it’s been eye opening, because you hear about Tiananmen Square, 1989, but you didn't know exactly how that happened," Joyce told NTD News. "And now that I’m seeing these photos of these protesters in Hong Kong in 2019, 2020. I’m realizing the CCP really hasn’t changed."

It's unclear if last year's clash caused any casualties. Hong Kong authorities refuse to release footage of the metro incident. Volunteers commemorating the event said they’re still demanding truth and justice.
