A fire has <a href="https://apnews.com/article/judge-house-fire-diane-goodstein-south-carolina-0ca7558e66215dc5ec23683dc861b8ae">destroyed</a> the Edisto Island home of South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Diane Goodstein, injuring three family members. The cause of the Oct. 4 fire remains under investigation, and authorities have found no evidence of arson.

At the time of the fire, Goodstein was walking her dogs on the beach. Inside the home were her husband and son, former state Sen. Arnold Goodstein, and another occupant. To escape the blaze, they jumped from the elevated first floor and were rescued by kayak from the swampy terrain of the backyard. One individual was airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina, while the others were transported by ambulance.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster stated on Monday that there is currently no evidence to suggest the fire was intentionally set. In a statement on X, McMaster <a href="https://x.com/henrymcmaster/status/1975307040655352268">wrote</a>, “SLED (State Law Enforcement Division) Chief Mark Keel has announced that at this point in the investigation there is no evidence the horrific fire at Judge Goodstein’s Edisto home was intentionally set. I echo Chief Keel’s call for everyone to exercise good judgment and avoid sharing unverified information while the investigation continues.”

SLED Chief Mark Keel said, “At this time, there is no evidence to indicate the fire was intentionally set. SLED agents have preliminarily found there is no evidence to support a pre-fire explosion.”

Keel's agency almost never releases statements while investigations are ongoing beyond the basic facts. But the last sentence of his statement on Monday indicated why he made an exception.

“I urge our citizens, elected officials, and members of the press to exercise good judgement and not share information that has not been verified,” Keel wrote.

Goodstein has been a state judge for 27 years, handling thousands of cases. Speculation immediately settled on one of her most recent decisions, where Goodstein blocked the Election Commission in South Carolina from releasing voter data requested by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Her restraining order was lifted about a week later by the state Supreme Court. It ruled that Goodstein failed to detail if the voter who sued would suffer irreparable harm or proved she was likely to win the suit on the merits.

The fire has sparked political accusations and speculation on social media. Rep. Daniel Goldman (D-N.Y.) <a href="https://x.com/danielsgoldman/status/1975009846627058123">said</a> on X, "Trump, @StephenM and MAGA-world have been doxxing and threatening judges who rule against Trump, including Judge Goodstein," adding: "Today, someone committed arson on the Judge’s home, severely injuring her husband and son. Will Trump speak out against the extreme right that did this??"

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller <a href="https://x.com/StephenM/status/1975048188621926646">responded</a> to Goldman’s post, calling him “deeply warped and vile.”

“While the Trump Administration has launched the first-ever government-wide effort to combat and prosecute illegal doxing, sinister threats, and political violence, you continue to push despicable lies, demented smears, malicious defamation, and foment unrest,” Miller posted to Goldman.
