North Korea's communist regime ramped up its war rhetoric in New Year declarations, threatening to "thoroughly annihilate" the United States if provoked.

NTD spoke to Brent Sadler, a senior research fellow for naval warfare and advanced technology at The Heritage Foundation. He highlighted the timing of the remarks, which coincided with similar rhetoric from Chinese leader Xi Jinping regarding Taiwan.

Mr. Sadler said that North Korea's New Year statements could signal intent—or merely serve as rallying calls to drum up domestic support. Mr. Sadler urged the United States government to focus on disrupting North Korea's illicit financial networks as a key strategy to curb its actions, and advised against providing the regime with excessive airtime on Western media outlets—which could inadvertently elevate the regime's prestige.
