The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, may be visible in the United States this week, <a href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental">according</a> to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center. A geomagnetic storm is forecasted for the next three days, potentially allowing the aurora to be seen in up to 14 U.S. states overnight on Tuesday, June 24, Wednesday, June 25, and possibly Thursday, June 26.

The aurora may be visible in parts of several northern states, including Washington, northern Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, according to NOAA’s aurora forecast view line indicator. The clearest views are expected in areas with minimal light pollution.

The NOAA provides animations on their site to show where the auroras have been over the last 24 hours, as well as estimates of what the following 30 minutes will be like. “The aurora’s colorful green, red, and purple light shifts gently and often changes shape like softly blowing curtains,” states the NOAA.

There are four main tips on viewing the Northern Lights, according to <a href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/content/tips-viewing-aurora">NOAA</a>. The first is geomagnetic activity. The geomagnetic field needs to be active for the aurora to be brighter and further from the poles. “Geomagnetic activity is driven by solar activity and solar coronal holes and thus it waxes and wanes with time. The level of geomagnetic activity is indicated by the planetary K index or Kp. The Kp index ranges from 0 to 9,” states NOAA.

The forecasted Kp for the next few nights is in the range of 3 to 5, which means the aurora will be further from the poles, brighter, and active with motion and formations. “If you are in the right place, these aurora can be quite pleasing to look at,” states NOAA.

The next tip to possibly view the aurora is to find a place where you can see the northern hemisphere without anything blocking your view. With a clear view of the Northern Hemisphere, and within the view line, it’s possible to see the lights when they are 600 miles further north.

The last tips to see the Northern Lights are to go out at night and away from city lights. A full moon can also affect the view. And lastly, it’s all about timing. “Best aurora is usually within an hour or two of midnight (between 10 PM and 2 AM local time),” recommends NOAA.
