President Donald Trump announced on Jan. 30 that he's nominating former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh to be the next Federal Reserve chair. Trump said he’s confident that Warsh will be a great Fed chairman with his extensive background and experience. Trump has been criticizing current Chair Jerome Powell for keeping interest rates higher than he likes.

A partial government shutdown is likely to kick in by midnight Jan. 30. This comes after senators failed to pass a package of funding bills, even after Trump worked out a last-minute deal with Democrats to address their concerns over ICE. Even if the Senate votes on Jan. 30, final passage could be delayed until Feb. 2, when the House returns from recess.

Just days after a major winter storm blanketed the East Coast, another powerful system is forming. Winter Storm Gianna could bring heavy snow, strong winds, and coastal flooding across the Southeast. Over 20 million people are under winter storm watches, including residents of Charlotte, Raleigh, Norfolk, and Atlanta. Authorities urge residents to prepare by clearing gutters, stocking up on supplies, and protecting pipes and pets.
