President Donald Trump marked his first six weeks in office with a 1-hour-and-40-minute speech to a joint session of Congress—the longest such address on record. He discussed a broad range of topics, from immigration to the economy and foreign policy. While a president's first speech before both chambers of Congress is not officially a State of the Union address, it serves a similar purpose.

Trump's unprecedented 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico went into effect on Tuesday, sparking backlash. In 2024, the United States imported nearly $1 trillion worth of goods from the two nations. The United States also doubled tariffs on China from 10 percent to 20 percent, with Americans importing roughly $400 billion in goods from China each year. Trump said the tariffs were a response to the vast amounts of fentanyl coming through America's borders, with much of that fentanyl originating in China.

A storm landed in California on Tuesday night, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and even the possibility of weak tornadoes. In Oklahoma, a tornado touched down early on Tuesday morning and, with peak winds reaching 105 miles per hour, uprooting trees and damaging homes. In New Orleans, severe weather is threatening Mardi Gras celebrations, with powerful storms sweeping through Louisiana bringing strong winds and increasing the risk of tornadoes. Authorities emphasized that they will not hesitate to cancel activities for safety reasons.
