Secret Service Says Gunfire Reported Near White House Overnight

An armed suspect is in custody after a violent incident late Saturday night at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, one of the most high-profile gatherings in the nation’s capital.

The annual event drew top leaders from across government, including the president, vice president, cabinet officials, and members of the media. According to officials, a man—armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives—charged a security checkpoint before being swiftly confronted by Secret Service agents.

During the confrontation, one officer was shot but was protected by a bulletproof vest. He has already been released from the hospital.

Law enforcement officials are crediting the rapid response of security personnel with preventing what could have been a far more serious attack.

President Donald Trump, who was in attendance, praised the actions of law enforcement and called for national unity in the aftermath, urging Americans to resolve political differences peacefully. He also pointed to broader security concerns, saying evolving threats require stronger protections than ever at major public events.

The suspect has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen—a 31-year-old resident from Torrance, California.

His brother had notified New London PD of a manifesto Allen had allegedly sent to his family members minutes prior to the incident, which clearly stated a desire to target administration officials. He also allegedly had a slew of anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric on his social media accounts.

As for the dinner itself, organizers say it will be rescheduled within the next 30 days, with plans for a larger and more secure gathering.
