The United Federation of Teachers representing over 100,000 public school teachers and staff in New York City say they're prepared to go to court come Sept. 10 if schools don't meet their own criteria for what they call a safe reopening.

President of the United Federation of Teachers, Michael Mulgrew, said Wednesday, "If we feel a school is not safe, we are prepared to take a job action, and if the state declares we are breaking the Taylor law, then so be it."

Months ago, the CDC issued recommendations for how to reopen schools. New York City's Department of Education also issued guidance, calling on each school to develop their own plans for enforcing social distancing, while asking that all staff members get tested for the virus before their first day in the classroom.

But for medical experts representing the teacher's union, this isn't enough.
