New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced Wednesday that the city's current police commissioner, Jessica Tisch, has agreed to remain in the post.

In a statement, Mamdani praised Tisch for “cracking down on corruption in the upper echelons of the police department” while also driving down crime in the city and “standing up for New Yorkers in the face of authoritarianism.”

Tisch, in an email to officers on Wednesday, acknowledged the different views she has with Mamdani but said a series of conversations with him had made her “confident" that she can lead the department under his mayoralty.

“Now, do the Mayor-elect and I agree on everything? No, we don’t. But in speaking with him, it’s clear that we share broad and crucial priorities: the importance of public safety, the need to continue driving down crime, and the need to maintain stability and order across the department. We also agree that you deserve the city’s respect and support,” Tisch wrote in the email.

The partnership pairs two leaders from vastly different worlds. Mamdani has promised to reshape the department by shifting responsibilities to mental health care teams.

Tisch, a Harvard-educated heir to a multibillion-dollar family fortune, represents the establishment—a steady moderate with nearly two decades in government service.

Tisch has been a vocal opponent of the state's bail reform laws, which Mamdani supports, and has advocated for hiring more officers. Meanwhile, Mamdani has softened his previous defund-the-police stance but maintains he will keep the department's headcount steady.

On Wednesday, both leaders appeared together at a Manhattan ceremony honoring officers killed in the line of duty. Tisch declined to field questions about past disagreements, saying she wanted to “leave politics out of it today.”

Tisch assumed the commissioner role last November when the department was recovering from overlapping scandals. Her predecessor, Edward Caban, resigned after federal authorities seized his phone and those of other city officials. Her interim successor, Thomas Donlon, faced a home search just a week into the job.

During her tenure, Tisch has overseen a decline in shootings and major crime categories while building a reputation as someone willing to hold the department accountable. She reassigned several top officials seen as allies to Mayor Eric Adams, and the department's top uniformed official, a longtime Adams friend, resigned in December amid harassment allegations.

The Justice Committee, a police reform organization, called the appointment “a rebuff of his promises to New Yorkers and a disturbing endorsement of NYPD's ongoing violence and corruption.”

The New York Civil Liberties Union urged Tisch to join Mamdani in reducing the city’s “misplaced demands on police” to take care of deeper-rooted problems, like the shortage of housing and mental health care.

Gov. Kathy Hochul, a moderate Democrat who endorsed Mamdani, praised the decision as sending a message to the Trump administration.

“This is an important step to send a message to the Trump administration that, if you’re coming here on the pretext that we need the National Guard because crime is going up in the city, that is not the story being told here in New York. Not at all,” Hochul said during an unrelated news conference.

The mayor-elect appointed veteran budget official Dean Fuleihan as his first deputy mayor earlier last week. Fuleihan, who previously served as Mayor Bill de Blasio's first deputy mayor and budget director, brings more than 40 years of city and state government experience.

Mamdani also tapped Elle Bisgaard-Church, his longtime chief of staff in the state Assembly and a top campaign adviser, to serve as his City Hall chief of staff.

These officials were selected based on "excellence, integrity, and a hunger to solve old problems with new solutions.”

In an interview with Fox News's Brett Baier on Nov. 5, President Donald Trump said: "I'm so torn, because I would like to see the new mayor do well, because I love New York. I really love New York."

He reiterated his position that Mamdani is a “communist” whose policies will fail.

Last week, Mamdani said in an interview with NBC New York that he plans to speak with Trump as his team prepares to take office.

"I will be reaching out to the White House as we prepare to actually take office because this is a relationship that will be critical to the success of the city," he said.
