New York City police are searching for a parolee accused of killing an elderly Queens couple in their home before setting the residence on fire.

Jamel McGriff, 42, remains at large following the deaths of Frank Olton, 76, and Maureen Olton, 77, who were discovered Monday afternoon in what Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described as a "horrific double homicide, robbery and arson."

The victims were found around 3:30 p.m. Monday after their son, a fire department EMT, received an alert from the couple's alarm monitoring service and contacted emergency responders, Tisch said. Fire marshals determined the blaze had been started deliberately.

Frank Olton's body was found in the basement, bound to a pole with multiple stab wounds, while Maureen Olton was found on the first floor with severe burns, according to the commissioner. The exact causes of death remain under investigation.

Surveillance footage shows McGriff walking near the couple's Bellerose home approximately 20 minutes before the bodies were found. His parole officer pointed him out from video images obtained from the area.

According to Tisch, McGriff had been going door-to-door in the neighborhood on Monday morning, asking to enter homes to charge his cellphone. Video shows him approaching the Oltons' home around 10:18 a.m. and speaking with Frank Olton before being allowed into the backyard and eventually entering through the rear door.

McGriff stayed inside for nearly five hours, leaving around 3:08 p.m. carrying a paper bag and duffel bag while wearing a black hat, jacket, sneakers and dark blue jeans, Tisch said, referencing surveillance footage.

"At this time, there is no known connection between Mr. McGriff, our suspect, and our victims beyond this chance encounter," Tisch stated during a Tuesday <a href="https://x.com/NYPDnews/status/1965513781502693789">news conference</a>.

McGriff has a lengthy and violent criminal history spanning several decades and is currently on parole after serving 16 years for a 2006 robbery conviction. He is also wanted in connection with two recent robberies, including a July incident at a Harlem GameStop store and another at a Manhattan Verizon location where an employee recognized his weapon as fake and fought him off, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.

He also failed to register as a sex offender last year, which should have violated his parole terms, according to Tisch.

As of Tuesday afternoon, McGriff was last seen on video earlier that day pawning two cellphones in the Bronx and "should be considered armed and dangerous," Tisch said.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are involved in the manhunt, including the NYPD and a regional fugitive task force combining local, state, and federal officers.

The commissioner issued a public warning about McGriff's murder methods, stating: "For the public, the message is clear: the suspect's MO is to go door-to-door asking for some kind of assistance until he can gain entrance, so do not allow someone you don't know or someone you're not expecting into your home."
