Two New York Police Department (NYPD) officers were hospitalized earlier this week for injuries they sustained while trying to break up an organized snowball fight at Washington Square Park in lower Manhattan, authorities said.

Officers responded to the disturbance in the park just before 4:30 p.m. on Monday. After a historic blizzard blanketed the Northeast in snow, a large crowd gathered and began throwing snowballs and chunks of ice, the NYPD said in a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/NYPD/posts/pfbid02iF6WzsecgbZbyJG8DbyvNSjqRervnRuDggdpYvxMVSYfm5ZUcDJmJLcq8SKMNNkVl">statement</a>.

“Two individuals intentionally struck the officers multiple times with snow and ice causing injury to their head, neck, and face,” the department shared.

In <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DVH7GooDj0x/?igsh=NjZiM2M3MzIxNA%3D%3D">footage</a> of the incident posted on social media, several officers can be seen being pelted in the head with large balls of snow and ice while being shouted at as they attempt to get through the crowd. A separate <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DVI1sA1jTwj/?igsh=NjZiM2M3MzIxNA%3D%3D">video</a> shows the massive crowd chasing a group of officers while hurling snowballs their way.

The gathering appears to have been promoted online by Sidetalk NYC. The account, which has nearly 2 million followers on Instagram, described the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DVJ7H5QgdFQ/?hl=en">event</a> as its “3rd Annual Sidetalk Snowball Fight.”

During a press conference on Tuesday, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani told reporters that he’d seen footage of the melee, noting that “it looked like kids at a snowball fight.”

“I’ve seen videos of kids throwing snowballs at members of the NYPD in Washington Square Park, and first, I want to say that officers have been on the frontline of helping our city respond to this blizzard,” Mamdani said.

“They have been keeping New Yorkers safe … They and our entire city workforce deserve to be treated with respect. The only person in our city’s workforce who deserves to be treated with a snowball is me.”

Patrick Hendry, president of New York City’s Police Benevolent Association labor union, criticized Mamdani’s response, calling it a “failure of leadership.”

“This was not just a ‘snowball fight,’” Hendry <a href="https://x.com/NYCPBA/status/2026387117098807716">said</a>. “This was an assault—by adults throwing chunks of ice and rocks—that landed two police officers in the hospital with head and face injuries.”

NTD reached out to the NYPD for an update on the injured officers, but a response was not received by publication time.

The department released pictures of two of the men who allegedly threw snowballs at the officers, noting that they were wanted for assaulting a police officer.
