An armed man was killed in a shootout with police in New York City on Thursday after he pointed his weapon at a man in an apartment-building elevator and at a deli worker, and threatened to shoot up a hospital in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the New York Police Department (NYPD) said in a <a href="https://x.com/NYPDnews/status/1989181210082570701?s=20">post</a> on X.

According to NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera, the incident began around 7 p.m. on Thursday. The suspect pulled out a firearm and pointed it at another man while in an elevator in a residential building on Madison Avenue. Rivera said the attack seems to have been unprovoked, and said the gunman kept his weapon pointed at the man until the elevator reached the first floor.

The man then went to a nearby deli where he pointed the firearm at an employee, declaring, “Call 911. I’m going down to the hospital to shoot it up.” He stole the deli worker's phone and then ran off.

Shortly afterward, the man entered the nearby Mount Sinai Medical Center, walked back outside, and placed a firearm on the ground. He then returned inside where he acted in a disorderly manner, and told an off-duty police officer working a paid security detail that he had a gun.

When the off-duty NYPD officer attempted to escort the man from the hospital, he grabbed the officer from behind, and a struggle ensued.

The suspect then left the hospital and retrieved his gun. The officer followed him outside and called for backup over the radio. The individual then walked down the street and encountered officers who were arriving in vehicles.

According to Rivera, the suspect immediately opened fire at the officers when they exited their vehicles. The officers then returned fire and shot him.

The man was transported to a hospital in a police vehicle, where he was pronounced dead. Officers involved in the incident were taken to a local hospital for evaluation, but no bystanders or officers were reported to have been seriously injured.

“This situation could have turned out differently,” said Rivera. “An individual walked into multiple locations with a gun, menaced multiple people with that gun, and then shot at our officers in the middle of a busy sidewalk with civilians in close proximity.

“Every day, our officers put on their uniforms and they encounter dangerous situations across this city. But it’s another kind of danger when someone goes into a deli and a hospital with a gun and opens fire directly at the NYPD,” he said.

The entire incident was recorded on security cameras at multiple locations, as well as on the body-worn cameras of the police officers, Rivera said.

So far, authorities have not released the deceased man's identity or identified a motive for his actions.
