Former President Barack Obama clarified remarks he made during a podcast about the existence of aliens on Earth.

Obama's comments about extraterrestrial life received a lot of attention online, prompting him to further elaborate his answer.

The 44th president explained he was trying to be lighthearted during the speed round at the end of the "No Lie with Brian Tyler" podcast published Saturday.

“I was trying to stick with the spirit of the speed round, but since it’s gotten attention let me clarify," Obama <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reels/DUy9E_UD9RR/">wrote in an Instagram post</a>. "Statistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there’s life out there. But the distances between solar systems are so great that the chances we’ve been visited by aliens is low, and I saw no evidence during my presidency that extraterrestrials have made contact with us. Really!”

Obama was asked during a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI-hgSE5QIw">podcast interview</a> if aliens are real. He replied, "They’re real, but I haven’t seen them," and said they are not being kept in Area 51, a highly classified U.S. Air Force facility in Nevada. There is no underground facility, Obama said, unless there is an "enormous conspiracy" and it was hidden from the president of the United States.

When Cohen asked Obama about the top question he wanted answered after becoming president, Obama jokingly answered: “Where are the aliens?”

Congress has recently revived efforts to explore the possibility of unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) and unidentified flying objects (UFOs), focusing more on the possibility of real threats to national security or air safety versus science fiction or conspiracies.

Lawmakers said public interest in the topic shows the need for the government to closely study the issue and share those findings with the American public.

Renewed interest has been revived in recent years after Congress and the Pentagon released reports and lawmakers held public hearings.

In Sept. 2025, the <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/subcommittee/task-force-on-the-declassification-of-federal-secrets/">House Task Force</a> on the Declassification of Federal Secrets held a public hearing in which four witnesses testified about their experiences with UFOs, as well as their perception that the military is not being transparent about those sightings.

“There is something out there,” Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) stated. “The question is: Is it ours, is it someone else’s, or is it otherworldly?”

The Pentagon’s <a href="https://media.defense.gov/2024/Nov/14/2003583603/-1/-1/0/FY24-CONSOLIDATED-ANNUAL-REPORT-ON-UAP-508.PDF">2024 report</a> on UFOs revealed hundreds of reports of unidentified and unexplained aerial phenomena, but no indications suggesting an extraterrestrial origin. The report included cases of misidentified balloons, birds, and satellite,s as well as some that defy easy explanation, such as a near-miss between a commercial airliner and a mysterious flying object off the New York coast.

President Donald Trump in 2024 told podcast host Joe Rogan that he often gets asked about the existence of aliens, but reiterated that he isn’t a “believer.”
