The average price for a gallon of gasoline in the United States rose 11 cents overnight to $3.11, AAA <a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-oil-gas-gallon-aaa-e2daee318b8e3e6a1124713909a410e4">reported</a> Tuesday. The national average for regular gasoline had increased more than 5 cents to $2.98 a <a href="https://gasprices.aaa.com/seasonal-shift-toward-rising-gas-prices/">week earlier</a>.

AAA’s daily fuel price tracker shows the national average for regular gasoline climbed from about $3 a gallon the previous day. AAA collects pricing data from stations nationwide and publishes updates at GasPrices.AAA.com.

The increase follows volatility in global oil markets after escalating military conflict in the Middle East disrupted energy shipments through the Persian Gulf.

Benchmark U.S. crude rose 8.6 percent to $77.36 a barrel Tuesday, while Brent crude, the international standard, climbed 6.7 percent to $81.29, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and commodities exchanges.

Oil prices are the biggest factor in gasoline costs. According to the EIA, changes in crude oil prices usually reach consumers within days or weeks as refiners and retailers adjust prices.

“Gasoline prices can change rapidly if something disrupts crude oil supplies, refinery operations, or gasoline pipeline deliveries,” <a href="https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/gasoline/price-fluctuations.php">states</a> the EIA.

AAA data indicates that seasonal factors were already putting upward pressure on fuel costs before the latest spike.

Refineries typically transition to more expensive summer-blend gasoline in late spring and early summer to meet federal air quality standards, a shift that often raises pump prices.

On Feb. 26, AAA <a href="https://gasprices.aaa.com/seasonal-shift-toward-rising-gas-prices/">reported</a> that refineries are beginning to produce summer-blend gasoline, which contains costlier additives to help reduce evaporation during warmer months.

“Gas demand is also expected to increase next month as spring break season kicks off and more drivers take road trips,” AAA said. The national average on Feb. 26 was $2.98, compared to $2.93 a week earlier and $2.88 a month earlier. Despite the rise, it remained lower than $3.13 a year ago.

With an 11-cent increase on March 3, customers are feeling it at the pump. In Jackson, Mississippi, Anne Dulske <a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-oil-gas-gallon-aaa-e2daee318b8e3e6a1124713909a410e4">said</a> she paid $15 more than usual to fill her tank Tuesday. “It’s going to affect everything in our lives,” she said. “It’s very scary, and it does hit closer to home than people think.” The national average price at this time last year was $3.09.

Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-oil-gas-gallon-aaa-e2daee318b8e3e6a1124713909a410e4">said</a> consumers are reacting quickly to the spike. “We are knee-deep into the gas price increases,” he said, adding that while further increases are possible, a national average of $4 per gallon appears unlikely under current conditions.

The White House also addressed the price jump. During remarks in the Oval Office on Tuesday, President Donald Trump said, “We have a little high oil prices for a little while, but as soon as this ends, those prices are going to drop, I believe, lower than even before.”

About one-fifth of the world’s traded oil, or about 20 percent at around 17 million to 20 million barrels per day, passes through the Strait of Hormuz, a 21-nautical-mile-wide passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea.

The route carries energy exports from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and Qatar, <a href="https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=65504">according</a> to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
