Diane Keaton, the Academy Award-winning actress whose distinctive style and memorable performances captivated audiences for decades, has died at age 79.

Keaton passed away Saturday in California surrounded by family members, a family spokesperson told People. The magazine reported that no additional details about her death were immediately available. Representatives for the actress did not immediately respond to inquiries from NTD News.

Throughout her career, she became known for her unique acting approach, such as delivering her signature "La-dee-da, la-dee-da" lines while wearing Annie Hall's iconic necktie, bowler hat, vest, and khakis, or portraying the tragic Kay Adams who married into the Corleone crime family in The Godfather films.

Keaton's breakthrough performances during the 1970s, especially in multiple Woody Allen productions, established her as more than a momentary sensation. She continued enchanting audiences for decades through her longstanding partnership with director Nancy Meyers.

She starred in diverse roles, including as an executive who unexpectedly becomes guardian to a baby in "Baby Boom," a recently divorced woman in "First Wives Club," and a separated playwright who becomes romantically involved with Jack Nicholson's music industry character in "Something's Gotta Give."

Keaton earned her first Academy Award for "Annie Hall" and received three additional nominations for "Reds," "Marvin's Room," and "Something's Gotta Give." When she accepted her 1978 Oscar, she characteristically laughed and said, "This is something."

Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in January 1946, Keaton came from a family outside the entertainment industry, according to <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000473/bio/">IMDb</a>. Her mother, Dorothy Deanne Keaton, worked as an amateur photographer and homemaker, while her father, John Newton Ignatius "Jack" Hall, worked in civil engineering and real estate.

Keaton developed interests in theater and music during her education in Santa Ana, California. She left college after one year to pursue acting opportunities in Manhattan. Actors' Equity, a labor union that represents actors, already had another Diane Hall, so she adopted her mother's maiden name, Keaton, professionally.

She trained under renowned acting teacher Sanford Meisner in New York, whom she later credited with providing her the confidence to "chart the complex terrain of human behavior within the safety of his guidance. It made playing with fire fun."

In her 2012 memoir "Then Again," Keaton wrote: "More than anything, Sanford Meisner helped me learn to appreciate the darker side of behavior. I always had a knack for sensing it but not yet the courage to delve into such dangerous, illuminating territory."

According to her IMDb biography, her theatrical career began as an understudy in the Broadway rock musical "Hair," where she gained notice for refusing to remove her clothing during performances. In 1968, she joined Allen's Broadway production "Play It Again, Sam," earning a Tony nomination and beginning their professional relationship.

She made her big screen debut in 1970 with "Lovers and Other Strangers," but her major breakthrough arrived when Francis Ford Coppola selected her for "The Godfather." The film won Best Picture and achieved legendary status, though Keaton initially hesitated about returning for the sequel, before the script convinced her otherwise.

She appeared alongside Allen in numerous projects during the 1970s, including "Play It Again, Sam," "Sleeper," "Love and Death," "Interiors," "Manhattan," and "Manhattan Murder Mystery."

Allen and co-writer Marshall Brickman created one of Keaton's most celebrated characters in "Annie Hall"—the charming woman from Chippewa Falls who captivates Allen's Alvy Singer.

Keaton expanded beyond comedy with her 1977 role in "Looking for Mr. Goodbar," which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She later appeared in Warren Beatty's "Reds" as journalist Louise Bryant, receiving Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for the role.

During the 1980s, she pursued directing opportunities, creating the documentary "Heaven," music videos, and a "Twin Peaks" television episode. The 1990s brought more mature roles, including her return as Kay Corleone in "The Godfather Part III" and appearances in both "Father of the Bride" films alongside Steve Martin. Her more recent films include the "Book Club" in 2018 and its sequel in 2023.
