A towering brick chimney on a Bronx apartment building collapsed Wednesday morning following an explosion, sending debris onto the street and forcing residents to evacuate, city officials said.

The Fire Department of New York <a href="https://x.com/FDNY/status/1973373319782211932">posted on X</a> that crews were responding to a “partial building collapse at 207 Alexander Avenue in the Bronx.” The department later stated that operations were ongoing as search-and-rescue teams continued to scour the rubble.

The New York City apartment building had a massive brick chimney running up 20 stories along the side of the building, which collapsed after an explosion. Tons of debris plummeted to the ground. The falling bricks buried sidewalks, struck a playground, and created a cloud of dust over the block.

Mayor Eric Adams confirmed at a news conference that no injuries or deaths were reported in the collapse of the chimney, which rose up from the public housing building’s boiler room. Officials said an explosion occurred just after 8 a.m. and are investigating whether a gas leak may have been a contributing factor.

“We avoided a major disaster here,” Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson said.

The New York City Emergency Management Department <a href="https://x.com/nycemergencymgt/status/1973380804936896596">said on X</a> that “NYCEM and emergency personnel are conducting an interagency response to a partial building collapse at 205 Alexander Ave. FDNY operations continue. NYPD is on scene for site security and enforcement of street closures. Con Edison Gas has shut gas utility to the impacted building. A community center at Alexander Avenue has been set up as a temporary shelter. MTA buses have been warranted for sheltering.”

Witnesses described a terrifying scene. “And all the side of the building just fell. It was crazy. All you see is smoke,” Diamond Freeman told WPIX-TV.

City Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol said inspectors are examining the building’s foundations and nearby apartments to ensure they are structurally sound. Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Kaz Daughtry wrote on X that some residents were being relocated and services were being provided at a community center.

The building is part of the Mitchel Houses, a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) development. NYCHA is the largest housing authority in the nation and has faced long-standing issues.

Around half a million New Yorkers live in aging buildings run by NYCHA. Tenants in the system have complained for decades about dangerous or unsanitary conditions, including rodents, mold, and heat and hot water outages.

Many of the properties date back to the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s. In 2019, a federal monitor was appointed to address chronic problems like lead paint, mold, and lack of heat. When he wrapped his five-year term in 2024, the monitor, Bart Schwartz, noted that the overarching issue for residents remained the “poor physical state of NYCHA’s buildings.”
