PepsiCo announced Monday that it will slash nearly a fifth of its product lineup and reduce prices on popular snacks and beverages in an effort to win back customers and boost profits. The overhaul comes after activist investor Elliott Investment Management, which owns a $4 billion stake in the company, pushed executives to shake things up.

The Purchase, New York-based snack and beverage giant, known for brands like Cheetos, Doritos, Lay's, and Pepsi, has faced tough times recently.

PepsiCo said in February that years of double-digit price increases and changing customer preferences have weakened demand for its drinks and snacks. In July, the company said it was trying to combat perceptions that its products are too expensive by expanding distribution of value brands like Chester’s and Santitas.

Elliott, an investment firm that took its stake in PepsiCo on Sept. 2, argued that the company lacked clear direction and had lost its competitive edge in the market. The firm pressed the company's board to make dramatic changes, and PepsiCo's leadership responded with what executives call an urgent action plan.

"We are announcing our plans and initiatives that aim to accelerate organic revenue growth, deliver record productivity savings, and improve core operating margin – starting in 2026," said Ramon Laguarta, PepsiCo's chairman and CEO, in a <a href="https://www.pepsico.com/newsroom/press-releases/2025/pepsico-announces-priorities-to-enhance-shareholder-value-and-provides-preliminary-2026-outlook?path=newsroom&path=press-releases&path=2025&path=PepsiCo-Announces-Priorities-to-Enhance-Shareholder-Value-and-Provides-Preliminary-2026-Outlook">statement</a>.

The new strategy involves three major moves.

First, PepsiCo will cut nearly 20 percent of its product offerings by early next year. Company officials haven't specified which items will disappear or exactly how much prices will drop, but they plan to use the money saved by reducing product offerings and streamlining operations to invest in marketing and offer better deals to consumers.

Second, the company will accelerate the launch of healthier snacks made with simpler ingredients. Recent additions include Simply NKD Cheetos and Doritos, which contain no artificial flavors or colors, as well as a prebiotic version of Pepsi. Coming in 2026 is Doritos Protein, aimed at consumers seeking more nutritious options.

Third, PepsiCo is aggressively cutting costs by closing manufacturing plants and shutting down production lines. The company has already closed three plants this year and shut several production lines.

Marc Steinberg, a partner at Elliott, <a href="https://www.pepsico.com/newsroom/press-releases/2025/pepsico-announces-priorities-to-enhance-shareholder-value-and-provides-preliminary-2026-outlook?path=newsroom&path=press-releases&path=2025&path=PepsiCo-Announces-Priorities-to-Enhance-Shareholder-Value-and-Provides-Preliminary-2026-Outlook">said</a> the firm is optimistic about PepsiCo's plan. "We believe the plan announced today to invest in affordability, accelerate innovation and aggressively reduce costs will drive greater revenue and profit growth," Steinberg said.
<h2>Modest Growth on Horizon</h2>
Looking ahead, PepsiCo is projecting modest growth. The company expects organic revenue to increase between 2 and 4 percent in 2026, up from 1.5 percent growth in the first nine months of this year. The company also plans to evaluate its supply chain and continue refreshing its board with leaders focused on growth and profitability.

"We feel encouraged about the actions and initiatives we are implementing with urgency to improve both marketplace and financial performance," Laguarta said.

The company said customers are already showing enthusiasm for its commercial plans, and it expects more products to be visible on store shelves during the first half of 2026.

PepsiCo's stock was flat in after-hours trading on Monday.
