Trump Calls Iran's Response to Latest US Ceasefire Proposal 'Totally Unacceptable'

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Poland called for the activation of Article 4 of the NATO treaty, a clause under which alliance members can demand consultations with their allies, after the country shot down Russian drones that entered its airspace on Wednesday.

Poland said 19 objects had entered its airspace during a large Russian air attack on Ukraine, and that it had shot down those that posed a threat.

“This is an act of aggression that posed a real threat to the safety of our citizens,”<strong> </strong>said Poland’s Operation Command in a post on X Wednesday morning.

Tusk said it was the first time Russian drones had been shot down over the territory of a NATO member state, and the incursion involved a “huge number” of them.

“We are most likely dealing with a large-scale provocation,” Tusk said on Polish Television, following an emergency meeting of Poland’s National Security Bureau.

He said the “situation is serious” and that the country was “ready to repel” this type of attack.

“The security of our homeland is our highest priority,” Polish President Karol Nawrocki said.

Poland is a member of the NATO alliance, a transatlantic defense pact involving the US that employs the principle that an attack on one is an attack on all.

Tusk said he was in constant communication with the Secretary General of NATO and Poland’s allies. "The fact that these drones, which posed a security threat, were shot down changes the political situation," said<span class="highlight" data-qa-component="highlight-text"> Tusk</span>.

Several European officials described the incursion as intentional and a sign of Russian escalation.

The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, called it “the most serious European airspace violation by Russia since the war began.” She said “indications suggest it was intentional, not accidental,” adding: “Russia’s war is escalating, not ending.”

The Polish military thanked NATO member the Netherlands for contributing F-35 fighter jets to defensive operations overnight, which have now concluded.

Countries bordering on Ukraine have reported occasional Russian missiles or drones entering their airspace in the past during the war, but not on such a large scale, and they are not known to have shot them down. Two people were killed in Poland in 2022 by a Ukrainian air defence missile that went astray.

Russia's RIA state news agency quoted a Russian diplomat as calling the accusations of an incursion "groundless" and saying Poland had not given any evidence that the drones shot down were of Russian origin.
<h2>Drones Rattle Baltic NATO Members</h2>
Leaders in the strategically located Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia—the NATO members that are most nervous about Russian aggression—expressed deep concerns.

“Russia is deliberately expanding its aggression, posing an ever-growing threat to Europe,” Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda wrote on X. Estonia’s foreign minister Margus Tsahkna said that the overnight attacks on Ukraine and violations of Polish airspace were "yet another stark reminder that Russia is not just a threat to Ukraine, but to all of Europe and NATO.”

Bernard Blaszczuk, mayor of the village of Wyryki in the Lublin region, told TVP Info that a house was hit by “either a missile or a drone, we don’t know yet.” He said people were inside the building, but nobody was hurt.

The Polish armed forces said Wednesday morning that a search for possible crash sites is ongoing and urged people not to approach, touch or move any objects they see, warning that they may pose a threat and could contain hazardous material.

Warsaw’s Chopin Airport suspended flights for several hours, citing the closure of airspace due to military operations.
