Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez is now facing a felony battery charge over an altercation involving a truck driver early Saturday in Indianapolis.

Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears announced the upgraded charge of “battery involving serious bodily injury” during a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfhSS3Q4YdM">press conference</a> on Monday. The charge carries a sentence of between one to six years in prison.

The prosecutor's office received an amended probable cause affidavit Monday, which led to the additional charge because the truck driver suffered serious injuries.

Sanchez, 38, had initially been charged with three misdemeanors.

Sanchez, a Fox Sports analyst, was in town to cover the game between the Indianapolis Colts and Las Vegas Raiders when he was pepper-sprayed and stabbed multiple times following a dispute with the 69-year-old truck driver over a parking space.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Chris Bailey declined to comment on whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the incident.

“I think the medical records are going to be extremely important for both individuals to help the prosecutors make an important charging decision to see if there’s some other way, another charge needs to be added, but also to see if there was some sort of altered state of mind of the individuals involved in this incident,” the police chief explained.

Sanchez’s attorney James Voyles declined to comment on the case.

The initial police affidavit, based on hotel video footage and the driver’s statement to police, indicated the truck driver pepper-sprayed and stabbed Sanchez in an act of self-defense.

Sanchez, who smelled of alcohol, accosted him, according to the driver.

Sanchez told police at the hospital that all he could remember was grabbing for a window. He also said he didn’t know who else was involved or where the altercation happened, the initial affidavit stated.

Self-defense laws will be at the center of this case, Mears said.

“Well, certainly Indiana has some of the most robust self-defense laws in the nation, and that’s always going to be part of the equation when you evaluate cases like this in trying to determine exactly what took place,” the prosecutor told reporters Monday.

Fox Sports acknowledged the situation during the NFL pregame show on Sunday.

“Friday night in Indianapolis, one of our team members, Mark Sanchez, was involved in an incident that, to be honest, we are still trying to wrap our heads around,” Curt Menefee said. “At this time our thoughts and prayers are with Mark and his family and all of those involved.”

Sanchez suffered stab wounds to his upper right torso. He remains hospitalized and was listed in stable condition Monday morning. Sanchez had been scheduled for a court hearing Tuesday on the original charges but was rescheduled to Nov. 4.

According to Mears, the case will be transferred to a felony court, which will decide if bond needs to be imposed.
